Using GE Kiosks - Problems reading document

My wife is a Permanent Resident and NEXUS member. I am a US citizen Nexus member and have had minimal problems coming in at JFK - once it couldn't get it to read the passport but they have a customs agent hanging around the machines who helped me and another time I couldn't get it to read the passport but there is an option to enter the information manually.

My wife came in at SEA and couldn't get it to read the green card - she tried and tried - tried it face down, tried it face up, nothing. Didn't see an option to enter information manually, and they didn't have a helper stationed over there.

Green card holders, what do you do, how do you put in the document? And are there different kiosk configurations, is there one that has no option to put in the information manually if the document isn't read successfully?

Had a similar situation coming back from Vancouver a few weeks ago - there was an option to manually enter passport info. It took longer to go thru the kiosk than the regular line that day.
