Interviews are required for a large proportion of renewals but not for a large proportion.

GE members can generally use GE for six months after membership expiration date.

One reason to delay submitting a renewal application or doing a renewal interview as much as possible and still trying to maintain GE membership for as long as possible is to minimize the chances of being denied membership during the renewal process.

Welcome to FlyerTalk Greedf2!

Based upon anecdotal evidence in this thread, where I have merged your question, your application will be treated as a renewal, although you will not be able to use your Global Entry benefits until you receive final approval.

Thanks GUWonder.

A follow-up question is that mine expires Jan 2020, but I can "renew up to a year early". If I renew at the same time as my wife will I still have 5 years from my old expiration date or does an early renewal move up the expiration?

If you renew early, the additional 5 years is added to the expiration date so you don't lose out by renewing early.

Long overdue update. I reached out to CBP through their website contact form on October 11. They got back to me on October 22 asking for more information. Was maybe a week and my online status finally updated. But I needed an interview. I scheduled that Thanksgiving week at ORD, which was the first time I could match my calendar. The CBP officer seemed a little mystified as to why I was there since it was a renewal, so that went pretty quickly. Fingerprints and picture and I was done. New card came a couple weeks later (issue date was the interview date). Expires on my birthday, rather than as of the approval / issue date.

No idea what happened in that process, other than I renewed after the card expired.

The earliest date you can renew is T-364. Once you receive final approval, expiration date will be five years from your next birthday. i.e.

15 Jan is your birthday
15 Jan 2020 Global Entry expiration date
16 Jan 2019 is the earliest date you can renew
15 Jan 2025 will be your new expiration date

Since I have several credit cards that reimburse me for TSA recheck and GE, I just used a different card to renew my TSA precheck membership. Voila, got an email today that is renewed and I did the renewal online on Saturday(today is Monday). So I should be good to go and get paid back. Win

Why do you keep both TSA PreCheck and Global Entry? Global Entry gives you TSA PreCheck benefit and more.

GE expires in August but I went ahead and renewed. I’m amazed at this expedient timeline:

Applied for renewal: January 5
Renewal approved: January 9
Card received: January 14

Also the new TT website is infinitely better than the GOES site previously used.

I don't understand the ordering of processing renewals. I applied for renewal on Dec 17th and my application is still pending. My membership expires in March. Is there one center or do different applications got to different processing centers, depending on where you reside?

TWA884 Jan 16, 2019 9:19 am

The processing time depends on many factors including, but not limited to, travel, residence and work history.

My partner forgot about GE renewal and their membership will expire in early February. Is it possible to use GE after expiration while awaiting an interview scheduled at a later date (assuming one is required to do another interview)? Or, must one complete all steps of renewal, interview included, before the expiration date?

I understand the government shutdown has closed the application centers...how would this factor in?

Thanks so much for your advice, much appreciated in advance!

As long as the renewal application is made before to the current expiration date, s/he will continue to receive Global Entry benefits for six months after the current expiration date pending the renewal's final approval (source).

My son forgot to renew and submitted it about 1.5 months after expiration. Despite letting it lapse, he got Pre-check both times since then (about a week after submitting the renewal).
