goodo goes to SYD and back

Sorry to disappoint but this will not be one of my 10,000 word trip reports. I will not post every little detail as I am prone to doing.

goodo decided since he hadn't travelled domesticially in years, it was about time he visited SYD. He found a flight to SYD with QF and back to MEL with DJ.

I used quickcheck to print my BP and the line for bag drop off (is it called fast bag drop off?) was loooooong, almost out the door. I boarded the plane and the seat next to me was still empty. Eventually a young boy walks up the aisle and lets me know he's in the window seat. He settled in, and I asked him if he was travelling alone, to which he responded he was. I asked him if he was going on holiday and he responded that he was a professional motocross rider and was flying up to Sydney for a race at the Superdome. He was 14 years of age, but looked no older than 10! He travels all the time and doesn't go to school. And he had no FFP!!! Shock, horror!

The flight was quick and uneventful. We were offered a snack and a drink. We landed on time in Sydney, and all passengers waited at the carousel for at least half an hour before any bags started coming out. Mine were among the first few - maybe my FT priority tags helped.

On the way back I flew DJ. About 30 hours prior to my flight my plans changed and paid my change fee and brought my flight a day earlier. I dropped off my car rental and was undercharged. I printed my BP. I remembered reading on FT about a DJ/United checkin desk all the way on the far left, and since the lines were very long I went there, dropped off my bag, had to pay excess as I had 28kg and only allowed 20kg. My UA 1P status didn't help, but it was only $20.

The flight was good, I had a spare seat next to me. Paid $2 for an OJ, and we landed on time. Bags came out randomly.

On one of the flights (I can't remember which) there was an announcement about all phones and electronics have to be turned off. The announcement continued that if your phone has flight mode (i was expecting them to say it may remain on) but instead they instructed passengers to turn it to flight mode before switching it off.

Overall both flights were pretty good. Pros and cons: QF miles - in QF program, or 50% or 0% in AA depending on class, DJ velocity points. QF free snack, DJ buy on board. QF 32kg allowance, DJ 20kg. QF good chance of widebody aircraft. DJ changes allowed on cheapest tickets with change feee 24 hours in advance. QF no changes.
