I once made it through MXP in about 25 minutes and my luggage made the connection. I've also done it in 40 minutes a couple times. (and also done the transfer quite often without luggage)

I also had the luggage not make it once or twice, but it made the next flight 3 or 4 hours later and was delivered to me the same evening.

This has me worried, becasuse it seems the flight from EWR is late 5 out of 7 times a week. At least by 20-30 min. And if we miss our flight to LCA I'm stuck spending my Bday in MXP while my friends are in Cyprus.

My experience with AZ TATL flights is that the pilots are typical Italian drivers- they almost always leave late and arrive early. My ORD-MXP and MXP-ORD flights are like that at least 80% of the time. Estimated flight times are padded to allow for late departures and for headwinds.

(take a taxi in Milan and you'll understand AZ pilots).

My experiences are similar. Almost every single flight left late... between 15-30 minutes late. However, we almost always arrived early or on time. Specifically, we left late from YYZ-MXP, MXP-LCA, LCA-FCO... and we all arrived early or on time. HOWEVER, MXP-YYZ was delayed for further "aircraft inspections" by 1 hour and we arrived 1 hour late.

1 hour between connections is pretty tight but you will most likely be OK at every airport except YYZ. YYZ is ALL busses between terminals and inter-terminal transit is very slow.

I forgot to mention, my opinion is based on carry-on only. I do not have any knowledge of wait time to re-claim luggage and whatnot before connecting.

Isn't luggage normally checked through to the final destination? (unless the pax are doing overnight layovers, in which case it won't slow them down waiting for baggage claim).

Well that was my thought, but someone said you had to clear some sort of customs. I can't see having to clear customs without your luggage. Maybe it's like the US. First point of Entry.

Your bags should be checked in all the way through to LCA. When I arrived there was a AZ flight from BOM/DEL before me hence the transit queue backed up quite a bit (all the way to the beginning of the walkway). When you transit you have to go through security check but NO immigration check (Cyprus is non-schengen area). Dont bother looking for someone to get you a boarding pass at the transfer desks. None of them are manned. Head directly to the gate.

The other option is to exit to Milan and enter back again. But this would require you to go through two rounds of immigration, a security check and getting a boarding pass at the CY check-in. More time consuming.

You dont go through Customs if you are not exiting in MXP. If you are just connecting, your bags keep going on to its final destination even if it is within Schengen, Non-Schengen, International. You have customs when you arrive in LCA (non-existent)

Ok I got it now. I was thinking of asking Nic if he could change us to out of JFK. That EWR flight is late leaving and arriving so often.

BTW there is a lot of padding in the journey time. YYZ-MXP and MXP-YYZ both arrived 1 hour early.
