MSP-JFK-CAI-long

This is my first trip report, so. I did a return trip to Cario and searched for recent experiences but could not find them, so hence this trip report. Egyptair leaves JFK at 6pm and I had to get from MSP to JFK to get the flight. NWA has two nonstop flights to JFK, one at 7am the other later. I did not want to be so stressed, so I chose the 7am flight. Worked out just great, even with the mechanics strike. Left MSP right on time and arrived JFK at 10:30 am. I am a world club member so I sought out the world club at JFK. As has been mentioned, this is a shared club, with many airlines. It is on the "A" section, but before security. Pardon me if I back up, finding the domestic luggage area in terminal four was confusing, but got the luggage and went up to level 3, which is the check in level where the club is. Found the club and was greeted just fine, asked for my boarding pass, which again, some say they don't do, but they did it this day. Got comfortable, great tarmac views and open bar, chips, etc. But this was 10:30 am. The food doesn't come out untill 3:00pm. More on this latter. So, got comfortable. The smoking room was closed because of some rewgulation, but the staff thought it would be open soon. No problem, you could walk 300 feet to the front of the terminal to smoke.Had a wonderful 4-6 hours in the world club. Asked them if NWA is closing this, but they had no knowledge of this.Egyptair begins check in about 3:30 pm via a JFK ground crew at a station that is hard to describe, not that its crazy, but in the new terminal, flight check in is a changing process and you have to look where the airline is. Once checked in, you have to bring your bags to the x-ray area which is not impossible. So, once checked in, back to the lounge and the sandwiches were put out. Egyptair 777 seats 3-4-2 in economy.I last flew MS in business in a 747-300 streached upper deck. Not worth it at all in my humble opinion (IMHO). The lounge is on the A side of JFK terminal 4 and MS leaves from the B side, but since I has so much time, it wasn't a big deal. Secondary secreening at the gate. One interesting note. The last time, MS had miniture bottles of wine that you could pick up at the boarding gate, this time there were none. But I knew that MS doesn't frown on you bringing your own wine (etc) so a stop at duty free was just fine. I do appreciate some red wine with my gourmet airliner dinner! I remeber the chaos the last time I left JFK but this time all was smooth and I got to my seat 22 H an asile in economy but close enough to business to see what was going on. And don't you know the business class passengers got the same amniety kit as coach! What can you do. I will finish this at another time soon.

Please do finish! I've heard nothing but horror stories about transatlantic MS, so I'm interested to hear your thoughts. (By the way, why didn't you fly NW to AMS and connect KL to CAI?)

MSP-JFK-CAI part two

I. too, have heard about horror stories about MS, but this night all worked out just fine (except the wine upon boarding!) The boarding was smooth, and as I said, the seat was just fine for Y class. Load was about 75% in Y, about 15% in C and about 2% in F. No predeparure in Y but at 6PM there is not much a line for take off so we were in the air shortly. Cabin crew were "senior" since I expect this is a prime route. Shortly, amenity kits were distributed, headphone, socks, eye shades, wet wipe, the same that was distributed to business class! Then a juice service. One thing interesting, no ice. And I do have to have my scotch on ice and asked for some, no problem. Dinner was served, choice of chicken or beef, non-remarkable airline food, then the crew disapeared. Another interesting point, when the crew was "off duty" they changed into "civilian" clothes, out of uniform. So, having my scotch and wine with dinner, I was able to get some sleep. No personal IF entertainment, just the main screen, but they showed three movies, plus the airshow. I don't know if that air ahow is all that valuable, once you are over Greece and there is three hours left to the flight, I want to say enough! But, a full breakfast was served over Greece, not just a continental breakfast. Landed one half hour early into Cairo without a problem. I would rate this flight much better than my previous flight in C class in a 747-300 stretched upper deck.Spent a couple of days in Cairo then to Aswan. MS133 left at 5am which is a challange, but the domestic terminal was quite at that time and no problem. We had a full breakfast and a movie on the A320 to Aswan which was fine. Did the Nile cruise and a bus to Hurghada in between. Flight from Hurghada back to Cairo left a t 11:30pm which wasn't a problem. Actually got a small sandwich. Then, a few days latter, MS #985 CAi-JFK, departing 9am arriving JFK at 3pm. I had a NWA flight from JFK to MSP at 5:30, so I was a bit nervous, but NO PROBLEM. Checked into terminal 2 at 6am, got a "good" Y class seat (20H) aisle on the two seat side, got through security and up to the departure level. Funny the check in level is one flight below the departure level. I managed an invitation to the business lounge and bribed the attendant for a scotch and a vodka. I had bought some wine minitures at duty free.So I was set for 13 hours of flight. The new terminal is just fine. We boarded on time and took off on time and we were one hour early into JFK! So, got thru customs, etc and got back to the shared world club, checked in for the 5:30 flight to MSP and by that time, the sandwiches were out in the world club so all was well. I did not check out if showers were available in the shared lounge. Anyway, all went well, which is much different from my last trip on MS. The last time we had a mechanical. The flight was supposed to leave Cairo at 11pm, but ended up leaving at 6am, watching the sun come up in Cairo was nioce, but I would rather have it happen in New York. That's it, let me know if you want anymore information.

msp-jfk-cai-return, part 3

Sorry, did not dicuss the food on the return CAI-JFK. There was a full breakfast - eggs, sausage, potatoes, cheese, etc shortly after take off, a mid flight snack of pound cake, and a full dinner prior to arrival into JFK (chicken or beef). It was certianly average food, but I think they tried.

A movie on the flight to Aswan! All I got a few years back was a biscuit and an orange juice! Thanks for the trip report...
