...how far is the airport to the old section of town? Would I need to rent a car? Thanks.

The airport is about a 20/30 min drive to downtown. I don't know about renting a car or parking there. I always stay in midtown and rent a car.

SAV is one of my favorite airports. Nice and small---all the airlines' gates are located on a single concourse, there's rarely a line at security, and rental cars are located within walking distance of the terminal.

Have done Savannah twice in recent years...and you will need to rent a car to get in to Savannah itself. As the previous posts suggest, Savannah is approx 20 - 30 mins from the airport.
Several hire car companies are adjacent to the carousels... Hertz, Avis, Alamo etc.. though it may be a good idea to pre book a car before you leave home!.
And dont forget to check out River Street!
