Aghadoe Heights Hotel
In the evening, we wanted to use our room a bit and ordered something from room service. The food was decent; you couldn't complain.

Aghadoe Heights Viewpoint
After dinner, we went for a short walk. First to the popular Aghadoe Heights Viewpoint.

Parkavonear Castle Aghadoe
Next, we went to Parkavonear Castle. Yes, Aghadoe has a castle. Or something like that. Ultimately, it is a small tower that is largely in ruins.

Aghadoe Cathedral and graveyard
As you can see in the photos taken from the terrace, there is a cemetery with ruins right next to it. Somewhat surprisingly, it is not just any church, but Aghadoe Cathedral. Scholars argue about whether it was really the seat of a bishop, but there is some evidence to support this. There must have been a diocese here at some point. The cemetery itself was used for the dead during famines in the past, so it has a somewhat dark history. Today, there are some rather grandiose graves, along with a tower. The pictorial stones are particularly noteworthy.

Inch Beach
The next day, we set off for the Dingle Peninsula. To cut a long story short, I liked it even better than the Ring of Kerry. But let's start at the beginning. Our first stop was Inch Beach. It's quite large and relatively busy.
https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...5cb408f276.jpg https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...5e79c27e10.jpg https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...6625bbd247.jpg https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...5dd615ab1c.jpg |
Dingle
There is also a place called Dingle. It was quite crowded when we visited. First, we went to St. Mary's Church.
https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...fda57e5d30.jpg https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...a44d868f23.jpg https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...dc88a5588c.jpg https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...a6fa0e1131.jpg The town stands out because of its many colorful houses. There is also an aquarium, but we didn't visit it. https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...cea8acf245.jpg https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...9dd93c79d2.jpg https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...a343dcd548.jpg https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...9df5d996d7.jpg https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...5381ccff59.jpg https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...63d4babeee.jpg https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...16b7df374b.jpg |
Fairy Fort and Pet Sheep
During the preparations, I had already seen an advertisement for a farm offering visitors the chance to “hold a baby lamb.” Many of you can probably imagine the comments I made. I'm still not sure whether I really want to hold a lamb in my arms. In any case, it's a good idea to bring a spare top with you.
But when we drove off, we saw this sign. https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...bdd7d20eb1.jpg After initially driving past, I had to turn around and go back, as GF insisted on taking a photo of me with a sheep. First, the view from the parking lot. https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...5a7f6f64ca.jpg https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...4e0982b8ba.jpg https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...70fd0d9c84.jpg The concept is simple. A pasture is fenced off, a small house is built at the entrance where you pay €2.50 per person, everyone is given a bowl of feed, and then you're ready to go. https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...0cbeb212c3.jpg https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...be74e1f77c.jpg https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...4b482280f3.jpg Visitors can then pet and feed sheep of various ages, llamas, goats, and horses. https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...853c9b9fbb.jpg https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...2c090d349f.jpg https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...c37efb735e.jpg https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...b239c0807a.jpg https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...8f7f7e0811.jpg https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...76ba6afd80.jpg https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...289607baec.jpg https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...895a0e9d56.jpg https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...caa9aa36ff.jpg https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...2b962fd477.jpg Then someone else comes along with milk bottles and visitors can feed the lambs. If sheep could talk, they would probably say the owners are looking for stupid people to hold the bottles—but honestly, it's really fun;) https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...3d941eb68a.jpg https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...564dce76e7.jpg https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...aa4ee49320.jpg Oh yes, there's also a bit of history here: the grounds feature a so-called “fairy fort.” These are the sparse remains of a prehistoric ring fort. https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...4c6e37e317.jpg https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...23ed81a183.jpg |
Dunbeg Fort
Dunbeg Fort is around 2,500 years old and one of the most important sites on the Dingle Peninsula. From the parking lot, you first have to walk down to the cliffs.
https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...a5b72f7d98.jpg https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...0afcda13f1.jpg Unfortunately, the fort itself is now just a shadow of its former self after large parts of it ended up in the sea during a landslide in 2018. It's definitely a shame. https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...3024a8c8de.jpg https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...72ca4085e0.jpg https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...564d52d424.jpg https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...e87ef960fe.jpg https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...337a363cff.jpg https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...439b4f4566.jpg https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...88b5192891.jpg https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...c7b3b860b5.jpg https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...f0276f6602.jpg https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...8c78bb62d1.jpg And back.... https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...7e8113bea8.jpg |
Céad Míle Fáilte Slea Head
The interesting thing about the Dingle Peninsula is that there are constant references to prehistoric structures. A few kilometers further on, there were more beehive huts to be seen. Once again, they were integrated into a farm.
https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...975921d7b4.jpg https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...b323f1e9c8.jpg https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...ac043adb20.jpg https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...7190d1a60e.jpg https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...bdecb86ace.jpg https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...56ffd9a806.jpg https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...e75d5a2f15.jpg This time, the complex was significantly larger and therefore more impressive, even though it was around 1,000 years younger. The views did the rest. https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...e01676f267.jpg https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...b78236bcb2.jpg https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...7f35b36484.jpg https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...97c084a23b.jpg https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...2403794cfb.jpg https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...22b54a751c.jpg https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...7a5f7ffb8c.jpg https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...d829565ca5.jpg https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...1eb9d50d6a.jpg https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...0ba6b408aa.jpg https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...b7a0a8accb.jpg https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...215b57fe93.jpg https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...72fcac7aff.jpg https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...88617189bc.jpg https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...34cc65c81b.jpg https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...ee3a70d0b3.jpg https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...19b05e224d.jpg https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...6ebee4cc3f.jpg https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...a5500c4067.jpg https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...2f273040c7.jpg https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...b721ae7b9d.jpg https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...1e05d16e2f.jpg https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...588e188866.jpg https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...8de675f259.jpg https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...e817b730cb.jpg I don't even want to know how many idiots are running after those dogs. https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...c28f0aaebc.jpg |
