VIDEO: Qatar Airways QR909 Sydney to Doha

Introduction

This report is from Mar 2023. I was travelling to Mumbai for family union. I checked with my family members to coordinate our flights as we would visiting for a short duration.

Once I received confirmation, I checked Qatar Airways along with other airlines. Srilankan was the cheapest with the best time connection in both directions, followed by Singapore Airlines, Malaysian and others. Qatar Airways was the highest fare among the options.

Selecting Qatar Airways would also mean backtracking to Mumbai. It's not a preferred routing for someone travelling to western part of India.

I haven't found Youtube video on Doha as a destination, hope this experience helps those wishing to stop-over in Doha.

Booking Flight

I thought about the ticket for a few days and decided to book flight with Qatar Airways along with 4 days stay in Doha.

I booked hotel through Qatar Holidays , which was not required but I didn't want hassle of a separate hotel booking.

At the time of booking, I selected seat 53A.

You will notice the return flight has less baggage allowance as the flight is code-shared with Indigo Airlines.

I could have selected return trip on Qatar Airways but it would have meant 14hrs transit in Doha. I decided to keep the selection as the transit time of 1 hour 45 minutes was perfect.

Entered the passport details, made payment and the ticket sorted.

Travel Preparation

I started researching about Qatar- Sim card, currency, travel, cost. Watched Youtube video, checked out car rental. After watching the video, realised renting car wasn't a good idea.

Doha has a good metro rail network and taxi's are cheap, decided to use public transport.

Qatar has good telecom network, with 5G available. Ooredoo [formerly called Qatar Telecom (QTel)] being the best. I found information on visitor sim for Qatar Riyal 35 QAR available at the airport.

I called my family friend in Qatar and informed him that I would be coming to Doha. Got confirmation, he would drive me to places of my interest. I had local travel sorted.

My last visit to Doha was in 1996.

Money Exchange

I wanted to exchange few dollars to Qatar Riyal priors to departure, could not find any exchange in city that would sell QAR. After searching, I found 1 exchange in the Centrepoint, Townhall but the exchange rate was terrible. Was offered QAR1.89 for a Aussie dollar. Whereas the official rate is AUD $1 equals QAR 2.43. I decided to buy some at the Sydney airport to pay for transport to hotel.

Pre-Departure

With my travel plan sorted. I was busy with work till the last day. I check-in the flight day before departure.

[text]I had noticed that my seat had changed to an aisle seat at the time of check-in.
[/text]

[text]I checked if I could change to another, only option was middle seat. None of the windows seats were available. Being a long flight, I didn't change.
[/text]

After completing the check-in process and ticking the notice. Received a message that boarding pass would be issued at airport.

Day earlier on Friday, checked the inbound flight information. Qatar Airways A7-APH would be operating to Sydney. Being a Airbus A380-800, information from Airfleet website.

Seating information

Aircraft rotation information.

Qatar Airways flies the Doha - Sydney then back and after few hours flies to London. This pattern applied to most aircraft which operate the QR909 flight.

Another interesting observation was that all flights were delayed by half hour and the previous days flight was diverted to Mumbai. During flight, captain informed delay is due to headwind during the time of the year.

Arriving at the Airport

Started early from home.

I wanted to arrive early, knowing it's a Airbus A380 and not having received boarding pass.

Check-in counter- J for Qatar Airways flight at the entrance

Check-in

Check-in information display inside the terminal

Looked towards the check-in counter and people had formed queue before check-in opened. As the queue was getting longer, I joined in so as not to fall behind.

Within few minutes check-in opened and the line moved into the check-in area. Waited about 20 minutes to be called for bag drop. I was asked my destination, passport was checked and bag was tagged to Doha.

Immigration and Security

After receiving boarding pass. I passed the food court to enter the immigration. There was no queue at the immigration, scanned my passport and walked into security check area.

In security, there was hardly 2 or 3 people ahead of me, I had no issues and was in the departure area in no time.

Got a chicken kebab

Walked towards gate, which was on the other side of the terminal.

Mostly luxury brands, shops weren't busy at the time.

Entering the pier

I was early and the gate area was empty.

Qatar Airways flight QR908 had arrived and was parked at gate 60

While waiting and charging, had chicken kebab. Not that good, even though didn't have expectation from airport food.

As always, I take a photo of the boarding pass and passport, just in case I lose it.

Waiting area started to fill up with 3 flight to Arabian Gulf - Etihad, Emirates and Qatar departing within few minutes of each other. First flight to board was Etihad Boeing 777-300 to Abu Dhabi followed by Qatar Airbus A380 to Doha and then Emirates Airbus A380 to Dubai.

Passenger gathered around the gate, waiting for boarding call.

Boarding

Boarding was to commence shortly by Zone numbers.Time was 9.05 and boarding gate opened for the flight.
After the business and first along with Zone 1 passengers, next group was Zone 2. I joined the queue when the Zone was called. Boarding pass was scanned.

Entered the corridor and a second boarding pass scan was conducted before being allowed on the aerobridge.

View of Aircraft - Qatar Airway A7-APH operating QR909 to Doha

OnBoard

Short queue formed on the aerobridge. Cabin crew at the door checked the boarding pass and directed passengers to their seats.

Economy seating in lower deck 3-4-3.

I was seated in the last section of the aircraft.

Walking towards the last section.

Seat

Seat had blanket, headphone and amenity kit placed for all passengers. The fabric seat was comfortable. My neighbour, a girl working in financial firm heading to London for working. I found that when I chatted with her at end of flight.

Being long flight and seated in the middle seat. I said to her, if she want to get up to stretch or get up for toilet, let me know without hesitation.

Seat pocket material on the tray.

Switched on the IFE, to check flight details.

Seat Pocket Material
Amenity kit, air sickness bag and safety card.

Qatar Airways Airbus A380-800 safety card

Amenity kit pouch contained eye shade, socks, toothpaste and brush

Boarding completed.

Some people have no understanding of dimension. Cabin crew organised the bags and close the overhead storage.

Pushback and Taxi

Aircraft pushed back on time, safety demonstration was displayed on personal screen

A long taxi to runway 34L. Light were turned off for takeoff, Seated in aisle had to rely on onboard camera for outside view.

Flight information

Departure

Departure for this flight would be from runway 34L, heading north and then turning West. Flying over Western Sydney and out towards West NSW.

I checked the IFE as I had planned to sleep after cabin service.

Had my phone charged

Wi-Fi

Aircraft was equipped with WiFi, but I had problem connecting while in the seat. Later I tried connecting while in the toilet it worked. As I wasn't able to use, I stopped trying.

Wi-fi was available as a paid service

Messenger plan offers an hour free

I felt internet was pricey and did not purchase the package due to data limit.

Economy class menu was available online.

Attempting to login. It didn't work, gave up after few tries. From previous experience, Etihad offers better value for money.

Inflight Entertainment System

I browsed the IFE and checked the offering. As written earlier, I was waiting for cabin service. I had planned to sleep the first half of the flight after meal and then watch the IFE in the second half as it was past midnight Australian Eastern Time.
Checked some information on Qatar.

Cabin Service: DINNER

Cabin crew came out with trolley an hour and 45 mins after departure. Somewhere over Northern Territory.

Watched the video to hear the food options. I chose the chicken.

Chicken thigh roasted with mashed potatoes. I asked for gin with tonic for drinks. Chicken was soft and moist.

Flight information when food was served.

Flight information

Cockpit view

Crew came out with trolley for another round of drinks. I asked for whisky with ice and received a wafer chocolate.

Before sleeping, I went to toilet. Toilet was clean with perfume and handwash available for economy passengers.

Cabin lights were switched off after meal. Found my seat and slept for next few hours.

Somewhere near the Equator, experienced turbulence, seat belt sign was switched on. That broke my sleep.

As I had woken, crew in my section asked if I would like something to eat. I said yes. Received a Veg roll along with orange juice.

I would like to say from this experience. Crew pro-activeness is what makes Qatar Airways, a well awarded airline.

Veg roll and orange juice.

Past the half way point, aircraft heading towards Srilanka. Closer to Srilanka with 5 hours 30 minutes to arrival.

Entertainment

With less than 4 hours left for landing. I switched on the IFE. Headphone in the jack.

Lighted switch on

Cabin Service: Breakfast

Crew came with trolley and distributed breakfast 2 hours prior to landing. Somewhere close to coast of Oman.

Option was Veg, chicken or beef. I selected the chicken. On opening it was chicken with noodles. Food was good and had taste.

Flight information over UAE

Captain came on the speaker and announced descent would be commencing. He informed the flight is behind schedule due to strong headwind and to make up time they have commenced descend shortly. Aircraft would take a Northern approach to minimise taxi time after landing.

I started to chat with my co-passenger where I gathered details of her next flight and destination.

Landing

Heading North and then turning West and then South to land on runway 16L.

This flight is a red eye throughout its journey. Due to delay, sunrise was visible at landing. Passenger on the starboard side had a beautiful view of lit-up Doha city, flying past the Lusail and West Bay skyscrapers. If flying into Doha, better to sit on the right side, if lucky to will get the city view at landing when northern approach is taken. Port Side is better when taking off towards North. View is better during landing as aircraft is slowing.

Arrived at gate after a quick exit and taxied to Gate.

Disembarkation started soon after landing. I was in no rush and moved towards the window to enjoy the outside view.

Disembarkation

I collected my handbag and waited for others to disembark as Doha was my final port.

Video: Qatar Airways QR909 Sydney to Doha flight route

Aerobridge to terminal, Not spotter friendly. Can't view the outside.

Took escalator up for baggage claim. Departing passengers board from both level.

Arriving passenger have to walk through a long corridor. Arrival and departure area are separated by transit desk and security check. Signage shows the transit and baggage claim direction.

Discover Qatar

After reaching the end of the corridor, have to take escalator down to enter the immigration area. As I had a Discover Qatar, I checked with the ground staff where the counter was. It was on the left side with a sign.

Qatar has new mandatory requirement since Feb 2023 that all visitors must have health insurance. It has to be purchased from Qatari company, list is available on the Discover Qatar website. I paid QAR50 for months cover. At the time of purchasing the insurance, have to enter the passport details and date of entry in online form.

I showed the Discover Qatar voucher to the staff manned by local women. She entered the voucher code and returned the print paper back. She did not ask for any details as all the information was already available from booking and insurance.

Immigration and Security Check

After getting the details checked. I joined the immigration queue. The line moved slowly compared to others as someone has some issue with visa or passport. When my turn came, I handed my passport to the immigration officer who was a local women. She asked me where I was coming from. I answered her question. She scanned my passport and then asked me to look at a mirror then took my photo.

She stamped my passport with a 1 month visa. All this took a minute.

After immigration, I entered security check, where the handbag was x-rayed. The person was contractor from Africa . The x-ray was monitored by local man. I took my hand bag and walked in the baggage claim.

Baggage Claim and Exit

By the time, I reached the baggage claim, my bag was already on the belt.

Took the bag and then passed the customs, which is divided into Green - nothing to declare and Red - To declare sections. As I had nothing to declare walked outside. The custom officers where directing some passengers to red section after while they were walking towards exit.

Arrival Area

Exited the custom to enter the arrival area. I first looked for money exchange.

I found the money exchange on the right side in the corner. I changed AUD $100 and received QAR192. Being an airport exchange, I knew the rate won't be good. I had to accept the rate as I needed money for the Sim card and taxi.

After exchanging money, I looked for the Ooredoo kiosk for the sim card which was near the entrance. I got the visitor Sim. Got it set in my phone, called my friend to inform him of my local number.

All set I walked towards the taxi bay which is in the corner of the terminal.

Exiting Airport

Got into the Karwa taxi - government operated. Taxi driver was from Ghana. I told him the address, he wasn't sure. Anyways he entered the road details and set off to the hotel.

Green Karwa taxi. Traffic was heavy being a working day in Doha.

I reached hotel around 7a.m. I had a long chat with the receptionist and porter. Got the room key and got organised and then went for breakfast which was included the booking.

Hope you enjoyed the trip. Thanks for reading.

End of Trip

If one must fly Economy, Qatar looks like a tasty way to do so. I hope QR keeps its A380s around long enough for me to eventually log a flight on one. Thanks for your report!

After breakfast, I returned to the room and slept again. I had some work to wrap. Stayed in room to complete the work.

Around mid-day, cleaning staff came to organise the room. Chatted to her and found she was from South Africa. After completing work, I rested again and got a call from friend for pickup at 5.30pm.

Returned to house for breakfast. At 10.00am left Al Khor. We would be going to Mesaieed. There is expressway to Mesaieed bypassing Doha.

I told my friend to take the old route to Mesaieed. This route would go through Doha corniche, Old Doha Airport road, AlWakra then to Mesaieed. Journey time now takes 1.30hr depending on traffic.

Doha Corniche

Bank street had a bus stop from people used to catch company shuttle to Doha in the past. This place is completely transformed. In the past there used to be roundabouts.

Bank Street, Doha

Stopped at Crazy signal which used to be called Crazy roundabout as the roundabout had many roads converging and was difficult to navigate. Heard of many accidents on this road.

Crazy Signal [Roundabout]

Passed the old AlMana building then the old Doha airport road, which used to have a roundabout to drive towards Salwa. During 80's, after the Doha Food Center, my father used to park the car next to the Falafel shop and we could see the aircraft's landing as it used to be a simple fence. Falafel used to cost QAR 1.50.

Old Doha airport road towards Al Wakra

Driving towards Al Wakra, which used to be a 4 lane road, there used to be roundabout after Doha airport road. AlWakra road had no streetlights in the 1980's. There was a period of power shortage during the 1990's due to some issue with Ras Abu Fontas power plant, alternative light were switched off.

Al Wakra road

Al Wakra Road

On the left side used to be National shop, which was very popular for electronics. People from Mesaieed used to be regular from shopping on Thursday and Friday's. On the right , used to be a roast chicken place, which I liked.

Al Wakra Road

After AlWakra, Mesaieed road used to start after a round about and a small row of pre-fabs houses.. In 80's and 90's Mesaieed road used to 4 lane with no streetlight. People used to speed, during 90's, cop's used to place camera between the trees to catch the racers. The first roundabout coming from Mesaieed towards AlWakra next to the port road was famous for accidents as some drivers did not slow their 4WD's and have seen vehicles slammed in the barriers. Seen some crazy accidents on Mesaieed roads during 80~90's.

Now the road is 8 lane straight

Mesaieed Road

1st roundabout of Mesaieed. Being an industrial town, Cop's used to set barricades and check driver id and address at night in the past.

Mesaieed

Entered Mesaieed, which as transformed from a small industrial town to a city.

I went to check the Al Maha club, where employees and families used to come for sports and entertainment. The club is closed now.

Aircraft: Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner

VIDEO: Qatar Airways QR556 Doha to Mumbai

Booking Information

Time went very fast. Night before departure, I completed check-in for the Mumbai flight.
Completed the check-in through the Qatar Airways website. I had selected the seat at booking and the selection remained.

I received an email confirming the check-in after few minutes.

Pre-Departure

On the day of departure, I called reception and checked the latest check-out time. Was informed latest time would be 10.30 am.

I had breakfast early and returned to the room to organise the bags.

Having a late flight, I checked out on time and requested reception to store my bag. I carried a handbag and explored City Center Mall, which is connected to the hotel.

Around lunch time, ordered Chicken biryani and lassi. The quantity was too much for me. I don't like to waste food, but had to give up. Food was good but heavy that I waited sometime after meal to continue the exploration. It was past 1pm. Decided to take few photos at Doha Corniche as I had spent enough time browsing the stores.

I bought a Doha metro day trip ticket for QAR 6. Train service is quick, reached Corniche around 2p.m after alighting at Al Bidda station.

West bay, Doha skyline

It was a pleasant day, time was almost 3.30pm. I headed back to hotel and collected bag.

Arriving at the Airport

I booked Uber through the app. Taxi arrived within 5 minutes. Loaded bag and was on my way to the airport.

Video: Doha Corniche to Doha Airport

Uber driver was from Hyderabad, India. We chatted about life in Qatar and other things. Drive to airport took 25 mins. Departure gate information signboard. Arrived at the airport early. I paid the driver - QAR 30 plus tip. Return was much cheaper than the fare I paid for the public taxi from airport to city.

Check-in

Only passengers are allowed to enter the check-in area. My passport and ticket was checked and was then allowed in the check-in.

Check-in was conducted through the self-check kiosk which is manned. My passport was scanned and visa was checked. Boarding pass was printed along with baggage tag.

I was asked to proceed to bag drop, where the passport and boarding was again scanned.

Terminal view

Free without the luggage and being early, I explored the check-in. Departure board indicating direction towards immigration. Airside view looking West. Qatar Airways Boeing 777 in special FIFA world cup livery.

Check-in counter view, looking at the demography at the airport. It was peak departure for flights to Saudi Arabia, India, Bangladesh, Pakistan and South East Asia. I did not notice any Australia-bound passengers in check-in area even though there is a departure bank between 7.45 and 9.00 pm.

Immigration and Security

I had plenty of time, but decided to complete the immigration early. To enter immigration passengers have to scan their boarding pass. Those with Qatar ID had a separate queue to scan their card to exit. I went to the counter manned by immigration officer. He took my passport, scanned the photo page and stamped Qatar exit in the passport. It took 5 minutes to complete the process.

I then entered the security check area, removed laptop and other electronic items, passed the scanner and was allowed to collect bag. Took about a minute.

Departure Concourse

After completing security, I took the escalator.

and reached the departure concourse.

Doha Hamad Airport has Concourse A,B,C,D and E

I checked the flight information, Gate was not allocated. Display information check at 6.20pm written next to the flight number.

I was early and decided to explore the concourses, starting with Concourse A

Video: Experience a walking tour of Doha Hamad International Airport

I explored concourse A,B and C. Watch video to experience.

Center concourse C is the longest. Most of the duty free shopping stores are in the Center of the terminal and the node of Concourse C. Walking towards center Concourse C.

Airside view is visible in the concourse C gates. Concourse A and B have waiting area between the airside and departure area.

Flight information in Concourse C

Close with flight information.QR556 would be departing from Gate C92. I had made a good decision to explore the other concourse first.

Indoor tropical garden the node of Concourse C

After viewing the garden, followed the signage towards gate.

As the gate was not very far, I took walkalator.

Getting closer, noticed signage pointing gate would be on lower level. Took escalator down and noticed few gates. C91 was boarding QR flight bound for Goa. Demography was mix of Indian and British tourist. Gate 93 used for QR flight to Addis Ababa which was closing soon while announcement was calling the last passenger.

Waiting area

Boarding time was close. Found a quiet space to sit. Completed social networking activities and updated everyone with flight status.

I took photo of my passport and boarding pass as I would have to fill the Indian immigration form.

Boarding

Boarding call was made, queue was formed to board. Ground staff opened gate C93 counter to cater to families with children and expedite the processing. Passport and boarding pass was checked. Entered a small waiting area and then allowed to enter the bus in batches.

Aircraft was parked in remote bay, bus ride took almost 10-15 minutes to reach the aircraft. Bus had stickers pasted on the windows and was unable to see outside till doors opened.

Boarding was through stair.

Onboard

Crew waited at the door to greet and check passenger boarding pass. Checked my boarding pass and directed me to the aisle on the right.

I reached my seat in rear. Aisle passenger had boarded earlier and was seated. I put the bag in the overhead locker and took my seat.

Inflight Service

Inflight service started 1 and half hour after departure as aircraft flew over the Arabian sea. Option was Veg or non-veg.

Crew also asked what I would like for drink. I chose gin and tonic.

Observation:

My co-passenger was a typical Gulf returnee. Parched of the favourite liquid. He asked for whisky. He had come prepared. He kept the tray in the next seat to take snack out of his bag.

As alcohol is restricted in Qatar and permits granted based on the salary, profession and organisation. Those working in low qualification skills and jobs are not allowed drive or buy alcohol.

Alcohol be can purchased for personal consumption from Qatar Airways store in a Doha mall. From what I have heard, permit cost is QAR1000 deposit and about QAR150 per year to renew.

I noticed there is a change in the representative Indian demography in Qatar compared with the past. These days, it's mostly professionals from India and some labour going to Doha. Labour work is mostly by Nepal, Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghans. Nannies and Sales and stores mostly Filipino and Indonesians and taxi, security and other low skill work by people from Africa. Saw many Turkish restaurants have opened in Doha.

Even on the flight, many passengers were transiting from UK, USA and Canada. Very few originated from Doha.

Returning back to topic. Upon leaving the country, labour group loose control when alcohol becomes available. My co-passenger didn't speak much, only asked for whisky and water every time the crew passed him. I didn't see how much alcohol was poured in each cup. He consumed 4 cups of whisky in an hour. Blood alcohol must be definitely over the limit.

His behaviour reminded me of the past, where I had seen similar behaviour.

Chicken tikka masala with gin and tonic.

Food was good. Tray was collected 20 minutes after service.

Observation:

I observed service was excellent on both flight, I had flown with Qatar Airways. Crew was polite and professional.

Even with the guy asking for whisky and water.

Watched the route map

Crew provided wafer along with drinks, but declined.

Disembarkation

As the seat belts sign was turned off, my co-passenger grabbed bag quickly and ran to the front before other got up. Another of the old time memories.

Observation:

Unlike the past, where people had to hours to clear immigration and custom, its very different now.

In the past people used to carry a lot of electronic good as it was not available. These days very few would buy electronic good from overseas and carry it to India. Only item that some people might buy is a iPhone, when a new model is released.

Now due to globalisation its very different, I find it very difficult to buy gifts for family and friends as almost everything is available and cheaper then overseas. Nowadays the foreign charm is on the decrease as many travel overseas, the group that is still attracted to foreign things is the aspiration type.

My acquaintance in Doha had told me that only Qatar Airways carries the 65 inches TV to India. Other carriers like Air India, Indigo and Vistara don't allow that tv in check-in bag.

I disembarked when it was clear to get up. Crew wished everyone as they disembarked the aircraft.

Immigration

After disembarkation, I noticed an Emirates A380 from Dubai arrived at the same time and passengers had started disembarking.

I walked briskly.

Just before immigration, staff were checking Dubai passengers and asking something about Covid declaration.

No such questions to me, I entered the immigration hall.

Joined the OCI queue which had about 3 passengers ahead of me. Queue for Indian citizen was long.

I handed my passport and immigration form along with OCI card.

As I was carrying a new passport, I had updated the OCI portal with new details, photo and signature. As Indian consulate has stopped issuing new OCI to existing card holders. I carried old passport and acknowledgement email along in case the officer wanted to see the document.

He did not ask me any question. Took my photo, scanned passport, stamped it and let me pass.

Baggage Claim

Passed through the duty free shops, As we had enough stock of alcohol and no one drinking in the heat. I skipped the shopping and entered the baggage claim area.

Bags had started to arrive on the belt.

Baggage claim belt

Transport information displayed on screen. My bag arrived shortly after I reached. Picked bag and walked to the Green channel. As I wasn't carrying any dutiable item, had bag scanned and allowed to exit.

Exiting the airport

After exiting the custom, I turned right towards the taxi counters inside the arrivals area. As I didn't have a local number, had to book a Coolcab.

After getting the taxi docket. I took lift to the lower level and search for the Zone and taxi number written on the docket.

Loaded the bags and was on my way home. Conversing with the driver and directing him to the address. He told me that the business was slow, he waited till 3a.m for passenger where as he would be out dropping passengers by 11p.m.

Reached home about an hour after landing.

Hope you enjoyed the trip. Thanks for reading.

VIDEO: IndiGo 6E1305 Mumbai to Doha

Introduction

Having spent few days in Mumbai. Read earlier report above : Qatar Airways QR556 Doha to Mumbai

Time passed quickly and it was time to return back to work.

Booking Information

I had booked flight with Qatar Airways and had a 1 hour and 30 minutes transit through Doha.

A week before departure, I received an email that the Sydney flight would depart 15 mins early due to Daylight saving ending in Australia.

I didn't want a 14 hours transit in Doha with an early flight. Decided to stick with the original booking and accepted the change.

Pre-Departure

I also received an email with a PNR number as the Doha flight was codeshare with Indigo. Prior to departure, I logged in the Qatar Airways website and tried to check-in, received the below message. I tried logging in the Indigo website with their PNR, it did not allow check-in.

I was tracking the flight before departure. Observed the aircraft flying to Doha, arrives in Mumbai from Dhaka and departs after an hour. Doha flight was arriving late everyday as seen from the screenshot below. I was hoping it would be on time as my transit time was short after the change.

Arriving at the airport

On the day of departure, I booked a Ola taxi early. Driver was local and arrived on time. As the peak traffic had not started, reached airport in an hour. Alighted from the taxi at Zone 6 and paid the driver in cash.

Airport did not look busy. I entered the departure area after showing the passport and ticket at the entrance. Checked the flight schedule, 6E1305 check-in was Zone K.

Check-in for the flight had just opened and passengers had queued.

As I was about the join the queue, ground staff asked If I was carrying power-bank in the bag. I answered no, he stuck a no power-bank sticker on the bag.

While waiting in the queue, a young guy in front asked me in Marathi, if I was going to Doha. He was travelling on a plane for the 1st time and being an international flight was anxious regarding the procedure. I said I'm not going to Doha but transiting.

Someone on the other side on the line said in Hindi, He was going to Doha and he can follow him. He ignored the person and said to me in Marathi, Can he follow me. While in the queue, I explained the procedure to him.

My turn came after 30 mins of wait. As I was going to the counter, He followed me at check-in. I told him to go to next counter to speedup the process. He asked me to wait for him after check-in.

I had passport and OCI was checked. Ground staff asked me If I would like a window seat, I was offered 3A or 19F. I chose the F seat on the starboard side thinking can get a good view of Doha city if approach was from North. I had selected the next flight seat at time of booking. Got boarding pass for both flights.

Check-in progress. After check-in was completed, I waited for him.

Security and Immigration

He came soon after and we walked towards security check.

Boarding card has to be scanned to enter the security check area. At the security check to remove everything on person and put it in the bag.

He followed me, passed x-ray and then physical check. My bag had batteries was pulled aside. Security asked me, if I had batteries and put my bag again to scan. I told the guy to go ahead and complete immigration. It took 10 mins to get the bag scanned as there other passengers ahead waiting to get bag re-scanned.

After the bag scan was completed, I scanned boarding pass again to enter the immigration. There were 3 people ahead and got divided further as counters became free. I had to change counter as a foreigner was having some issue with visa. I must have waited 3 mins to reach immigration counter.

The immigration officer checked took my passport and OCI card, scanned and then stamped exit.

Departure area

Entered the departure area and passed the duty free shops. Flight Schedule. 6E1305 would be departing from gate 48B.

Flight information

Planespotting

I had completed all the procedures, I checked the airside from the food court. As I already knew aircraft had not arrived. I continued waiting in the food court. Air India dominating the gates and tarmac.

Air India B787-8 pushback and a Vistara Airbus A320 occupying gate 48B. I knew there would be gate change as the Vistara had not activities around it.

Indigo growing numbers.

After spending some time, planespotting. I decided to check the gate area. I had eaten before arriving but while walking past the food court. I was unable to find any information about this flight on Youtube.

Not sure, if the service would be a Buy on Board[BOB] or full service. Seeing the food, decided to return and have something before boarding.

IndiGo VT-IBB Airbus A321-251NX arrives from Dhaka. As it approached the gate on the right side, I knew there would be gate change. Aerobridge was connected and passengers disembarked. I had finished food by then.

I decided to return boarding area. Thinking passengers may be bussed to the aircraft. As I got closer, I noticed the co-passengers walking towards the other side. I met the guy again, he informed me there was gate change.

I followed others as I didn't check the gate number. Departure gate was reassigned to 66B

As I was seated in Zone 2, I would be boarding before him. Wished him luck with the new job and that we may not meet upon disembarkation as it is likely I would have to rush for the next flight.

Zone 2 was called and showed my passport and boarding pass and was allowed to proceed to the aerobridge.

I had selected the chicken honey mustard sandwich with marble cake slice.

Food packaging on the tray. Passenger behind purchased a chicken biryani, crew accepted Indian rupee ₹500 .

After I finished eating, kept the rubbish on the tray for collection.

There were 8 vacant seats in the exit row. All the other seats were occupied.

As aircraft was approaching Qatar, it was almost past the arrival time of 6.40pm. 1st officer announced descend would be commencing and to prepare cabin for landing. Aircraft approached Doha Hamad International Airport from the South. The passengers on the port side had nice view of Al Wakra and aircraft descended to land on runway 34R.

Aircraft landed at 7.00p.m.

Landing felt smooth as I was seated on the landing gear, even though braking was hard. A short taxi after exiting the runway.

Aircraft docked at Concourse B.

Disembarkation

Passengers were seated as the aircraft docked at gate.

Seat belt sign was switched off. Passengers stood in the aisle waiting for door to open.

I knew by then I would have to rush. I disembarked the aircraft at 7.15pm.

Transit

Upon entering the terminal, ground staff had boards with gate numbers for Sydney, Almaty, Johannesburg and Khartoum. Watch video to see the gate numbers of other flights.

I found my gate for Sydney flight would be C12. I checked and walk briskly following the transfer sign towards security check.

Reached the transfer security area at 7.25pm. There was only 1 passengers ahead clearing security. I put all my things in the bag and cleared security. I then took escalator down to enter the departure concourse.

Hope you enjoyed the trip. Thanks for reading.

Great report. Having done QR909 just over a year ago and in economy it is a long old slog especially on a completely full A380. It arrives early into Doha so always book the hotel room for the night before!

Doha is a lovely city - so peaceful and quiet albeit soulless. Did you see the massive gold thumb statue in the souq?

VIDEO: Qatar Airways QR908 Doha to Sydney

Introduction

I had 1 hour transit in Doha and had arrived from Mumbai.

Pre-Departure

I had selected the seat at the time of booking.

Qatar Airways London returning aircraft usually operated the Sydney flight. I tracked the flight to Sydney. Qatar Airways A7-APF would be operating to Sydney.

Transit

I had a short transit of 1 hour in Doha due to change in Daylight saving time in NSW. The Indigo Airlines arrival time was 6.45pm. As the aircraft was late by half hour. Incoming aircraft had docket at Concourse B and departing aircraft gate was in Concourse C. I had to rush after disembarking from the flight.

Being worried that I would miss the flight. I walked quickly and reached the security by 7.25 pm.

Video: FLIGHT TRANSFER AT DOHA Airport

Security check

Transfer security check is opposite to the transfer desk. I put my things in the bag to reduce the checking time. Bag was passed through x-ray and I was cleared. I checked the flight information board to confirm the gate. Then took escalator down to enter the departure area.

Departure area

I had checked that the boarding gate would be C12 upon disembarkation and also on the information screen. I walked briskly knowing it would be a good 10-15 minute walk. I had explored the terminal on my previous trip.

As I was walking towards the Concourse C, I thinking of my options, one was taking the mid-field train. Decided against the idea as it would have meant waiting for the train and also I had to walk back. Which would have meant additional time to reach gate.

Video: A walking tour of Doha Hamad International Airport

Boarding

As I was walking towards the Concourse C gates, I was met by ground crew looking for Sydney bound passengers. I informed her that I was travelling to Sydney. She reported to boarding gate on the walkie talkie. I was the last connecting passenger to board and they were looking for me.

I had to run on the travelator with bag on the back to keep up with her.

Reached boarding gate - 10 minutes before departure. Ground crew took my passport and boarding pass to the counter. While I passed security and had bag x-ray at gate.

As I reached the counter, heard the ground crew say to the other staff should we print Qatar Airways boarding pass for the passenger. Other staff said no. He had informed the crew that I was connecting from Indigo.

Boarding pass details entered in the system, I was allowed to continue on the flight.

Onboard

As all passengers had already boarded. When I reached the seat, co-passengers were already seated in the aisle and middle seat. There was couple from Ireland.

My seat had blanket and headphone, the lady was seated in the middle and man on the aisle seat. She took the headphone from my seat and said it was for her. I was tired to bother about a headphone, I said ok.

Later she found hers and returned mine.

I had kept pen with me to fill the details. I explained to my co-passenger how to fill the form as they did not know the origin country name.

I found out from the lady that they were from Dublin, visiting their daughter in Australia.

Aircraft an hour from Sydney

As it turned South, I was thinking it would be landing on runway 34L

Turning towards North

I was looking at the flight map and noticed the aircraft was flying towards Pacific Ocean

As it flew past Sydney and over the Ocean, Knew there must be wind change and aircraft would be landing from East.

Turning North West over the Pacific Ocean. The East - West runway 25-7 is rarely used.

It is during winter months when the wind direction change that aircraft's land from East and take off towards the West. Landing from West and take off towards the East is very rare. Most of the time, the North and South runways are used. Long hauls usually take off in North or South direction, even when landing is from East or West.

Got my ticket and walked towards the smart gate which is available to Australia and New Zealand citizens. There was a long queue for other nationalities. I was 3 in queue and was out of immigration in 5 minutes.

Baggage claim and Quarantine

I reached baggage claim and watched as bags were hitting the belt.

This is when I realized, How would my bag be loaded on this flight, when I had to run and just made it. I wondered if I had strolled to gate, I would have flown next day with my bag, .

I also remembered my past experience with Air India flight from Delhi. Passengers were not allowed to board as we had arrived 15 mins before departure. Ground staff had said that cannot go for security and immigration clearance as the baggage cannot be transferred and captain didn't want to delay the flight.

Soon I heard my name on the speaker to report to baggage counter. By then I knew what had happened. When I reached the counter, I was informed that Qatar Airways had faxed about my bag. It was not loaded on the flight due to late incoming flight.

My passport and boarding pass was photocopied. I was asked if I know the brand, shape and colour of the bag. I wasn't able to remember the brand but told him that there is baggage tag.

I had to sign the form and got a report with tracking number. I was informed he would contact me when bag arrives.

I was at the counter next to the quarantine exit. The lady officer asked if my name was announced on the speaker. I said yes. She took my incoming passenger card and was cleared to exited the quarantine check.

Exiting terminal

As I didn't have luggage, I walked towards the train station. Scanned the Opal card. A train had arrived at the platform, I boarded the train.

I realised I was on the wrong train, which was going in the opposite direction. I disembarked at the next station to change train for Central. Being tired, I slept through the journey to wake up at the my home station.

I knew Qatar Airways operates daily to Sydney. I was expecting bag to be delivered next day. I got a message from handling company at 7p.m, bag had arrived. I received the bag at 9pm next day.

This is the last trip report of this series.

Hope you enjoyed the trip. Thanks for reading and your comments.
