To clarify what I meant: For example, the bread was suddenly served in a basket; at Tastig, individual bread courses were served on small plates. Otherwise it was all less complicated, but we enjoyed it better. |

Villa Feltrenelli
It was time to say goodbye. Our luggage was collected and waiting for the car.
https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...7cfdab39fc.jpg How was it now? Really good. Overall, I was very happy with Villa Feltrenelli, they do a lot of things right here. I can only warmly recommend it, it's worth it. |
Arena Verona
We stopped off in Verona on the way to our next hotel. Our first destination was the Arena, near which we parked. From the outside, it looked like many arenas.
https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...78261bad4f.jpg https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...7e93898a1b.jpg Inside there are old corridors and it is wonderfully cool. https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...125aff4eac.jpg https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...504625cd90.jpg https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...d449a78cdb.jpg https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...f7e1947f24.jpg Inside, you could see the event seating, even though nothing was taking place during our visit. You can walk up the tiers and look over the edge into the city. https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...7fa114a8bf.jpg https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...63e1ee5b5a.jpg https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...704cf098fc.jpg https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...c6cf64d490.jpg https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...a3c701e34a.jpg https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...f67fd5abd3.jpg https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...d7768748ad.jpg https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...1b30dd26a5.jpg Without a doubt worth seeing, even if it doesn't take an eternity to visit. |
It looks like one of those places where you can enjoy a nice concert without feeling too serious about it. I like it.

I definitely have to go to a performance. I think the style has changed a lot in the last few years. If you see photos of arenas from the 90s or earlier, you'll hardly see a man without a suit and tie. In current reports, however, you don't see any men wearing a tie.

At least if people maintain decorum, relative to time and place, I can stay silent. Even if the move from being sent to get a tie to enter a bank to being the only one with a tie in the bank is... painful, in it's way. But then, after all, I don't own a bowtie, and it's unlikely I ever will.
I even have a bow tie because a dinner jacket doesn't look very good with a tie. I just don't have a practical opportunity to wear a dinner jacket anymore. |
Verona
After the arena I made my way to the next destination, here are a few impressions.

Casa di Giulietta Verona
The Casa di Giulietta is an essential part of any visit to Verona. I just took a look at the inner courtyard with the balcony and the statue that you are supposed to grab the breasts of. Very crowded and not really my cup of tea.

Then vendors would appear offering seat cushions. At first you'd laugh, but several hours sitting on stone, with no seats, backrests or anything, would test most bums' pain tolerance, and on every pass the seat cushion vendor would find thankful new clients. |

That's just the reserved seating. I watched quite a few opera performances there in the late 1980s and the seconda gradinata was very popolare. Tickets were a very reasonable ITL 15,000, which is about € 7.50 in today's money. People would sing along and all that. No ties, but of course lots of Italians who would be dressed nicely, just not in formal wear. Because of the open seating, you would come as early as possible to get a good place to sit.

Piazza delle Erbe Verona
Piazza delle Erbe is the main square in Verona, and during my visit there was a market going on. There are a number of beautiful houses.

The next church was Sant'Anastasia. The brick church, begun in the 13th century, is richly decorated with some important paintings.

Santa Maria Antica and the Scalier Tombs Verona
We went to Santa Maria Antica and the Scalier tombs.
https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...efc71506a0.jpg First a look inside the small church. https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...beddf4b6b3.jpg https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...2039cdd59e.jpg The graves themselves are in the open. Some of them are very elaborate tombs, others are quite simple sarcophagi. There was a sign at the entrance saying that you could only enter with a ticket for one of the city's museums. When I asked, I was told that you could also get in if you put a voluntary donation in a small basket. https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...d5bb4f81e2.jpg https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...969c9daf88.jpg https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...6d8580f0f7.jpg https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...f7bda18d70.jpg https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...da1fdbdbc1.jpg https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...5628bb07a1.jpg https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...070abbd631.jpg https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...072896e454.jpg |
Venchi Verona
On the way back to the arena and then to the car, I stopped briefly at Venchi. It's a chain of chocolatiers that also sells ice cream. It was decent, okay for a snack.

San Zeno Verona
The last thing I looked at in Verona was San Zeno. It's just outside the city centre, so we took the car there.
https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...b5f6b33da0.jpg Built as an abbey church in the 12th century, it still has many old paintings to offer. Esplanade Tergesteo Montegrotto Terme
I was looking for a hotel in the Padua region because I still had a few white spots on my map of Italy. After some research, I was interested in the Esplanade in Montegrotto Terme. It was in a good location and looked quite modern. The rooms included a suite with a whirlpool on the terrace and sauna, which looked neat. Nevertheless, it was a big unknown for me, I had never heard of the hotel before. In terms of price, the suite was not cheap at around €900 per night; a few years ago I wouldn't have paid that for a fairly normal-looking 5-star hotel, even if it was the largest suite.
When booking, it was possible to book half board for €40 more per night. Even if I wanted to eat out one evening, it was a good deal. I booked it because even if I hadn't eaten out twice, it would still have paid off according to my bill. In the end it was actually a very good deal, but more on that later. When we arrived at the hotel they managed to piss me off a bit at first. There was work going on at the entrance gate, only one gate was open which I later found out was the exit. Do you drive through there now? https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...0937cb2d19.jpg After I got out, I realised that it was the only access road to the hotel. So I just drove through. The hotel itself didn't look like my usual hotels. Even if you couldn't deny certain modernisations, it was a rather ugly building. https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...5f350152ee.jpg https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...4d858d6609.jpg It looked a bit nicer at the entrance. https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...61e07df69b.jpg https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...64917490bb.jpg |
Wow. That looks like a company retreat hotel from the 70s. I would have thought I arrived at the wrong address.
|
I’ve got to agree with Fabo.sk on that. If I arrived and saw that frontage knowing it was €900 a night I’d be checking my cancellation policy before checking in. One hopes it was all uphill thereafter?

Esplanade Tergesto Montegrotto Terme
After the first impression, let's go to the hotel. I realised relatively quickly that practically everyone here speaks German - I had landed in a German colony. Of course, I'm not accusing anyone of having foreign language skills, but it's strange. At one point, people even apologised to us, saying that we needed to learn German even better. Well, we are in Italy. I should work harder on my Italian....
But back to the hotel. In the lobby, an effort has been made to liven up the elongated room with modern art. The lobby area is actually well done. https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...11630e74e7.jpg https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...425ac3c9db.jpg https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...f930df850e.jpg https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...56e79b0a97.jpg https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...e56818f059.jpg https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...88bffe1a91.jpg https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...244b98a8f4.jpg https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...3721dc4d7c.jpg https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...432de411a7.jpg https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...4f20375603.jpg https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...71a4bdb433.jpg Our room was on the first floor. https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...21231f363a.jpg https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...cbddea8024.jpg https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...1a60ba8d46.jpg |
Esplanade Tergesto Montegrotto Terme
Some of you may be wondering what the €900 "Vital SPA Suite" in the hotel looked like. Sure, I had seen pictures on the website beforehand, but I didn't really know much. It was a bit of a mystery. After all, I had read that it was 75 square metres + 18 square metres of terrace.
When we entered the room, the impression was mixed. The furnishings were quite modern and there were nice details. On the other hand, it has to be said that €900 for this room is quite a lot. https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...5287362c59.jpg https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...680f57574a.jpg https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...2411867b8f.jpg https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...4185dd7336.jpg https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...f3d1a676de.jpg https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...fbe70d4658.jpg https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...e822a4fc35.jpg https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...e8587bfe96.jpg https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...19b2f3f3b4.jpg https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...bb346b81b4.jpg https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...ea8503e749.jpg https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...1495c010a6.jpg https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...953715e7a6.jpg We didn't really need the sauna, but we were looking forward to the whirlpool on the terrace. It looked really good too. https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...8542f08dbb.jpg https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...97c1bef1c3.jpg https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...ff6d5d9aa3.jpg https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...d4452ed295.jpg Unfortunately, it had one tiny disadvantage. A circulation pump was permanently active and could not be switched off. The thing was mega loud, I tried to make a video (switch on the sound!). From the terrace you had a good view of the pool area, more on that later. https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...6fa14beed0.jpg https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...bd20c68b0a.jpg https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...d29879df7a.jpg https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...0d018b028e.jpg https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...8334fa3f06.jpg https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...19bb7e5399.jpg The view out the front. https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...d557e8e0be.jpg The obligatory floor plan. https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...cade533156.jpg If it hadn't been for the problem with the whirlpool from hell, it would actually have been a decent suite. If it had been priced a little more reasonably (I think €500 would be fair), it would be easy to recommend. As it is, I'm only satisfied to a limited extent. It wasn't a disaster, but it wasn't great either. |
Good Lord that comes across as loud! I’d feel aggrieved that it would be considered acceptable.
“GF grumbled why I always had to take the biggest one.” Just…. you have no idea how strong the temptation for off-colour comment is right now :D |

Esplanade Tergesto Montegrotto Terme
Now that I've already grumbled a bit, let's move on to the SPA. And there was nothing to complain about. You could already see part of it from the balcony. Large and wonderfully warm thermal water. In the spa area, there was initially a large indoor pool with underwater bikes and 2 whirlpool areas.
https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...29b0d232bf.jpg Outside there was a small pool enriched with oxygen (on the right) and the large thermal pool with different areas. https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...2f81f02a6b.jpg There was also an adults-only area on the roof, where a fireplace was lit in the evening. We were the only guests in the water on 2 visits - marvellous. https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...283c338cb3.jpg https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...8ab70c241a.jpg https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...9271efe485.jpg https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...57379fd2c9.jpg https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...a00922dde9.jpg The SPA is really one of the nicest I've ever had in a hotel. If you like relaxing in the water, you'll really get your money's worth here. In this respect, it could hardly be better. |
Esplanade Tergesto Montegrotto Terme
Time for the first dinner. Here, too, they were fully catering for Germans, as the menu shows.
https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...ab88ab072f.jpg In the hotel all guests have a fixed table, ours was in the nicer part of the restaurant. https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...ab428d5148.jpg https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...2a4e6338cf.jpg The meal begins with starters from the buffet. In addition to salads, there are cold dishes, actually there was always meat such as carpaccio and fish such as scallops or tuna. https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...47a128e251.jpg https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...994f4f7cdd.jpg https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...6dd4afe7dd.jpg https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...e8aa7d69ef.jpg https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...9896649c72.jpg https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...21d1cdb2b6.jpg The second course was then served, today we had ravioli. Solid. https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...d0e8af8cda.jpg The main course was octopus, also tasty. https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...6b81f8940e.jpg For dessert, there was a cheese buffet with really good cheeses. https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...b7e5b4c834.jpg https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...29e8138e29.jpg There was a large dessert buffet, and you could also order ice cream if you wished. https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...2f9a88aebe.jpg https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...9de21a0452.jpg https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...82e367c902.jpg The food was certainly not of star quality, but it was good. Sensational for the price of €20 per person, but otherwise pleasant. |
Prato della Valle Padua
Now it's time to explore again. We went to Padua. First a short walk across the Prato della Valle.
