Merrion room service

During a short stopover at the hotel, we decided to order something from room service. We had fish and chips, scones and a selection of patisserie. They advertise an art tea.

I can't say I was impressed. The fish & chips were good, with I mean €18 still OK. The scones were OK, but I think they were €16. They weren't that great. I found the patisserie outrageous for €16 as well. It was neither particularly good nor particularly elaborate - just colourful cake.

Considering that Cod & Chips is in excess of € 15 at Beshoff or Leo Burdock nowadays, € 18 for room service at the Merrion (with mushy peas!!) is a steal.
Portion size would lead to a riot at any traditional chippy though.

You shouldn't expect too much and you shouldn't expect to be full. For me, the portion was OK because we went out to eat in the evening. As for the low prices, I gave the Merrion a good compensation deal with the scones and these cakes

National Botanical Garden

At the end of the day, we went to the National Botanical Garden. It is not the largest botanical garden in the world, nor is it outstanding in other respects, but we still enjoyed it. Like many things in Dublin, admission was free.

Variety Jones

In the evening, we went to Variety Jones, a Michelin-starred restaurant.

This is also a rather loose affair. There is an open kitchen.

There is only one set menu, which is again not too expensive at €85. The food was good and creative.

A nice meal, the restaurant can be recommended.

Every time I look at the title "A short trip" I wonder why I have been reading this in instalments for over 6 weeks now!

Merrion Bar

After returning to the hotel, I was drawn to the bar. The background was that I had seen in the booklet about the Merrion's art collection that there were 2 gymnasts hanging there. Since I like Turner very much, it was a must-see.

Well, both pictures are by William Turner, but it is not the famous Turner, but William de lond Turner.
The bar was very empty.

We drank 2 mocktails, both of which were good.

I always make a note when @offerendum recommends a restaurant at a price point less than 100 EUR!!

Merrion Square Park

Before heading to the airport, we went once more to Merrion Square.
First the Defence Forces Memorial.

The park itself is not known for its floral splendour, it is more suitable for a picnic or even for children to play.

Bernardo O'Higgins Bust

Henry Grattan Bust

The most famous monument, however, is that of Oscar Wilde. The rush is enormous, some people want to climb on the monument and take at least 100 photos.

A few characteristic Dublin doors on buildings around the square.

Oscar Wilde House

Next we went to the Oscar Wilde House. On Saturday and Sunday you can just visit it, during the week it serves as a university and there are only guided tours. I think the entrance fee was 12 €, but I'm not sure anymore.
In the house there are a few historic rooms to see, it is now no world sensation. I would not align my trip after it.

Check Out Merrion

Now only the check-out was left and it was remarkable. They had already slid a bill under the door and on it I found the fee for 3 days in the underground parking. Ah, so I had won a car!
Full of excitement what I would get it went to the reception. My joke I was really excited which car I get they did not understand and also my addition one should bring me something nice, because I am demanding, showed no effect. In the end, I pointed out that I have a car, but this is in Germany. After they then determined the bill was OK, I became clearer and in the end they agreed to take the underground parking from the bill. At a check it was then only 2 nights (after all), after further, now somewhat annoyed complaint, these were also removed.
The worst service was at the Merrion at the end.....
