What is quite normal in Europe is not in America. It's always fascinating how different the culture is.

You've made me want to return to Capetown simply to eat. I've eaten at La Colombe but otherwise have not made a visit into a gastronomic trip.

LOL so the Etihad sponsored team (who play at the Etihad stadium) beat the Emirates sponsored team (who play at the Emirates stadium), and you got to watch it live while flying Emirates.

I really enjoy reading your trip reports. I feel like I’m enjoying a flight to a place I’ve never been. The outstanding restaurants, nice hotels, and gorgeous scenery through your photographs are just marvelous.

So true. Mrs. SFO777 is definitely American.

Thanks SanDiego1K. Cape Town is an amazing gastro centre.

That was really hilarious. In fact I was so confused after watching the game that I mentioned to our FA the "I love Etihad but your Wifi is not very good".

Amazing report as always! The food looks incredible (both at the restaurants and with Emirates), and unbelievable that you are able to pack in so much (with jet lag) in such a short window of time. I bet you are exhausted when you finally reach your home in CO!

All best wishes - and look forward to the next trip.

Matthew

Epic! And so inspiring....
Didn't fly much lately because of our first (21 months old) child (and the second to arrive in two weeks), but when I hit the air again later this year it will be exactly like you did it in this wonderful report.

Thank you

Thank you for the time and effort involved in sharing your experiences with much appreciated directness
Sorry to hear of the Mexico experience - great recovery!
The caviar on champagne sorbet sounds inspired - have you tried Epicure which has undergone a bit of a transformation in that the chef has re-invented himself?
Would you say that AF La Premiere, overall, delivers the best food experience ex-home base? That has been my experience so far.
And the Wine List on Emirates, with their cellaring programme, decanting, the occasional P2 and Yquem on board is surreal and unrivalled compared to most carriers.
How do they do it (their wines and spirits are catastrophically expensive compared to any other airline in F, SQ and QR included)?
It is also great to see two pals doing what they re passionate about
Bravo
Ian

Thank you very much Matthew. The odd thing about these whirlwind trips is that we never spend enough time in one location to get jet lag. I got home by 11pm, slept for 8 hours and felt completely refreshed the next morning.

Thanks so much JohnRain and congratulations to you and your lovely bride on your new family arrivals. Our Denver son and his wife have a 2 year old and twin 1 year olds and it's exhausting just being grandparents.

Thanks very much Ian. Haven't tried Epicure yet but it is on the list. For me, overall Air France is still #1 based on the CDG ground experience, intimate La Première cabin and the CDG La Première Lounge. But Emirates is a very close 2nd based on food and wine and incredible network. If they could only retrofit all their 77Ws with new First, they would easily jump to #1 overall for me.

What IS that AA "meal"? I really cannot tell except that it looks absolutely inedible!

Looks like you had a great trip nonetheless!

A joyous read, as always! Two of the greatest joys of life are a stay at a great hotel & dinner (I'm not a lunch person) at a truly fabulous restaurant. You & offerendum are truly the masters of restaurant porn.

We are traveling to the Maldives & Cape Town this winter. Ellerman House was unsurprisingly unavailable so we're booked into the Silo. I usually drool in anticipation at the prospect of staying in a new hotel, but I just can't get excited about the Silo. Perhaps it's because I am so disappointed about not staying at Ellerman House, which is a bucket list hotel for me. Or perhaps it's because the Silo appears to be more of an "influencer" hangout than a proper luxury hotel.

May I ask what you thought of the service at the Silo?

Nice trip report SFO777… Fyn remains one of my favorite dining experiences, and La Colombe never disappoints.

What a fantastic trip report! Thank you for the time and the effort. It’s like you take us on a journey with you. Thank you!

Emirates first class service seems very nice but I just can’t stand the sight of the cabin… It is all golden and what not.
