Flying to Pangkor Island with SKS Airways

After nearly 2 years I did not travel with airplane due to Covid-19, finally in year 2022, I had the chance to fly once again and this time with the newest commercial airlines in Malaysia, SKS Airways.

SKS Airways, with initial fleet of 2 Twin Otter DHC6-300 is the latest entrant in Malaysian commercial aviation industry which focusing flights to island destinations and unserved routes. Although to be based in Johor Bahru, but currently, most of its operations are flying out of KL's secondary airport, Subang Airport (SZB). On 23rd February, I booked a flight with this small carrier (via its official website at www.sksairways.com) from Subang to Pangkor Island, a tropical island located in the state of Perak on the West Coast of Peninsular Malaysia.

Arrived in Subang Airport about 2 hours before flight. Its good to see commercial airports in Malaysia started to get busier and lively once again.

Departure out of SZB this morning. Our flight scheduled to be departed at 11:50am.

Had breakfast in Toast Box Cafe.

With a view of the airport's ramp.

Firefly (FY), a subsidiary of Malaysia Airlines and 1 of the main operators in SZB.

After breakfast, I went to the 2nd floor of the terminal where there was a huge window with clearer view of the ramp plus more aircrafts that can be seen.

Then, I went to 1st floor (ground floor) again for check-in.

During check-in, passengers were required to stand on this machine for their weight to be taken.

Received a receipt-style boarding pass.

Walking towards departure hall.

While walking towards departure hall, I saw SKS Airways's 2nd Twin Otter, 9M-KIB resting which meant I will be flying with SKS Airways 1st Twin Otter, 9M-KIA.

Firefly's own lounge.

Departure Hall which consisted multiple boarding gates.

And there were more shops and cafes located here.

Our boarding gate was Gate 4.

Few minutes before boarding, all SKS Airways' passengers were required to watch a safety video which played on this smart tv. Then, we were escorted by the same lady in check-in counter to board our aircraft.

Airline: SKS Aiways
Flight: KI 6351
Aircraft: Twin Otter DHC-300
Origin: Kuala Lumpur-Subang (SZB)
Destination: Pangkor Island (PKG)
ETD: 11:50 AM
ETA: 12:35 PM

I was really excited to board Twin Otter plane for the very 1st time. First Time flying with SKS Airways and also my very first time flying to Pangkor Airport.

SKS Airways' 1st registered aircraft, the over 40 years old 9M-KIA.

Inside the Twin Otter. The cabin was so hot.

Settled in my seat, 4A which was window seat.

The seat pitch surprisingly really good.

Next to the Twin Otter's propeller engine.

The cabin started to cool down a bit and became very noisy after the engine was on.

Total passengers on board for this flight was only 5 including me. In addition, there was also 1 SKS Airways staff joined us in the cabin.

After boarding completed, the First Officer made a pre-departure announcement.

A short taxi on the runway and we were airborne.

Subang town.

Passing over a golf course.

Flying over Shah Alam with the city's famous icon, the Blue Mosque was clearly visible.

The contents of the seat pocket.

Our plane made a 180 turn towards the Straits of Malacca and around 15 minutes later, the sight of sea started to appear.

Our plane was flying at this low altitude throughout the flight

Probably some speed boats down there.

The meeting point of 2 oceans of different colors.

Small archipelago.

Cabin ambiences inflight.

View from the other side of windows. Pangkor Island can be seen already.

Approaching Pangkor.

Captain pulled the throttle in preparation of landing.

And we landed at Pangkor Airport (PKG) ahead than ETA.

The co-pilot made a post landing announcement.

Our plane making a 180 u-turn at the end of the runway.

And parked at the dedicated space in this tiny airport.

All passengers disembarked.

1 last look to our plane.

Welcome to Pangkor!

Walking towards the terminal.

PKG's tiny terminal building which looked like a traditional Malay village house.

The latest Malaysian island awarded with this status.

Arrival area of PKG. It was very simple and basic. There was a washroom and 1 small shop selling snacks, beverages and souvenirs.

Thanks for the report. Brought back some happy memories. In 1994 I had a holiday on Pangkor Laut and flew from Subang to Pangkor on a Dornier 228.

Day 1

I had pre-booked a pick up service with the resort where I stayed from the airport. But if you did not make any arrangement in advance, do not worry as the airport staffs will be more than happy to call a taxi service for you.

I stayed in Pangkor Holiday Resort, located in Pasir Bogak Beach about 10-15 minutes drive from the airport.

My room.

Which came with a balcony.

Decided to have lunch at this small restaurant located just a short walk from the resort.

Pasir Bogak was quite developed and it boasts a number of chalets, resorts and hotels as well as several food stalls, shops, restaurants and a supermarket.

Went to Pasir Bogak Beach.

The Pasir Bogak Beach, 1 of the most popular beaches in Pangkor.

The beach is suitable for swimming and sun bathing.

The sea water of the beach.

Sadly, the large rocks on this beach were vandalized by valueless love messages left behind by some pathetic couples.

Later that evening, I took 1 of these iconic pink-colored van taxi, the main and sole public transport available in Pangkor Island to Teluk Nipah for dinner.

Vintage interior.

And ancient facilities.

Took about 7-8 minutes to reach Teluk Nipah from Pasir Bogak.

Teluk Nipah area seemed more happening than Pasir Bogak.

Went to 1 of the road stalls to get my dinner.

The stall located very close to the beach with simple seating.

Some tables were set up exactly on the beach.

With a nice sunset view.

My dinner.
