From Sin City to the O.C.

Tour of Duty 11th November 2020 to 12th November 2020

I was home several days and got word of a trip. A short trip but better than no trip. I booked an air ticket and the time came to go to the airport. I ordered Lyft to LGB and arrived and checked in and checked bags after a queue. There is no separate queue for A-List at LGB. Perhaps that might be remedied now that Jet Blue vacated LGB. My bags weightd 45.0 and 39.5lbs. I cleared security with TSA Precheck and there was no additional screening of carry on items. Total Time elapsed was 14 minutes.

Southwest #3103 LGB-LAS B-737-700 Boarding Pass B24
Seat 22F Cruising altitude 29,000 feet Estimated flying time 0:45, actual 0:45
Depart: Gate 2 Scheduled 08h30, actual 08h32 Taxi: 8 minutes
Arrive: Gate B21 Scheduled 09h40, actual 09h30 Taxi: 5 minutes
Reclaim checked bags 26 minutes after arrival

I boarded as an A-Lister and walked outside and up a ramp. The capacity controlled load was 83/93. It was announced it was 41F at LAS. Pushback was 2 minutes late and takeoff was to the northwest. We turned left and I saw San Pedro before going overwater at 0:03. Landfall was at 0:05 over the north coast of Orange County. I saw the Bolsa Chica Wetlands and at least part of the Seal Beach Naval Weapons Station. Then I saw a panoramic view of Orange County followed by the Inland Empire. I got cup of ice water at 0:07. I was a bit surprised there was service on this short of a flight. At 0:10 I got Snack Mix. I saw Fontana and the California Speedway (or whatever they call it now) and then the Interstate 15/215 split. At 0:12 I saw Lake Silverwood then Lake Arrowhead and Big Bear Lake farther out. We went over the High Desert. At 0:15 I saw the Salton Sea to the far distance. We crossed Interstate 40 at 0:18. I thought I felt descent at 0:20. Descent was announced at 0:25 and it was 48F at LAS. At 0:30 we entered Nevada airspace and turned more north. I saw the solar panels on the California side and Primm, NV to the distance followed by Jean, NV. I saw a snowcapped Mt. Charleston at 0:33. At 0:37 we crossed Interstate 15 heading east. At 0:40 we turned north and I saw Lake Mead. We turned west at 0:42 and then landed east to west. We arrived at gate 10 minutes early and deplaned via jetway.

After I reclaimed my checked bags I headed to where the passenger pickup was. A friend of mine picked me up and took me to his house. That was because I learned the truck might not be available until later in the afternoon. We visited and then another friend picked me up as the first friend had to go to an appointment. I was taken to the shipper and found the vehicle was ready.

Trip: Las Vegas, NV to Orange, CA 280 actual miles
Make: 2020 Ford E450
Model: Box Truck
Transmission: Automatic
Governed Speed: unknown but at least 70mph
Route: Interstate 15 to California 91
Highest elevation: 4,730 feet Mountain Pass Interstate 15 15 miles south of the NV/CA state line
Unleaded gasoline price USA: 2.399$ per gallon at Rebel North Las Vegas, NV
Permits Required: NV Trip Permit

I loaded my gear and did the inspection. When I was good to go I stopped to get some flares as there were no safety triangles or flares. Then I took on fuel in North Las Vegas. Afterward I got on the 15 and there was some congestion and slowing in the Las Vegas area. I saw a variable speed limit on the 15 for several miles. I stopped in Jean, NV for a rest stop and then I proceeded to Primm, NV and had evening rations at Carl's Jr which allowed limited dine-in. Numerous places did not allow dine-in. I made another pit stop in Cima, CA followed by a final pit stop in Baker, CA before reaching Yermo, CA where I spent the night.

Thursday I continued south and was told not to deliver too early as the receiver was expecting other trucks earlier. No problem as I am not much of a morning person. I made a pit stop in Hesperia, CA then continued down the Cajon Pass and stayed on the 15 all the way to the 91 where I headed west to Glassell Avenue where I exited and headed south into Orange. I reached the receiver for execution of delivery and conclusion of this trip. I got Lyft home to conclude this brief tour of duty.
