Aside from potentially getting the licence plate of the bike, I think you'd be rest assured that there isn't much that you can do about it at the time. There is a mild risk when confronting someone in a foreign county; especially over something as simple as property. Fortunately, like you, I've only had 1 attempted mugging in Rio de Janeiro after some 67 countries visited. I find, the best practice, is to not take anything you're not prepared to lose. An irritating circumstance for sure.
