Mini Trip Reports
My reports are typically long in style, and usually broken up into different sections, each one that looks at the flights, the food, the accommodation and so forth.
For my short trips, I’ve decided to put together a one post note that will keep everyone up to date with what I’ve been doing, but also saves people reading multiple posts. These will be more like photo reports, with more images than text. Let me know what you think. Do you guys want to see more mini trip reports? Or do you prefer full length reports?

Mini Trip Report: Penang February 2017
After checking in at Terminal 1 for my SilkAir flight, I went quickly to the lounge to stuff my face for 30mins.
After my rapid face stuffing exercise, I rushed to the gate. A nice small plane to get me to Penang. I think it’s an A321. Am I right? I was staying at Mansion One Penang, which was right next to Gleneagles hospital. There was a twin room. The beds were quite comfortable, although a bit basic. Also, this room was not en-suite. Though there was a nice bathroom for guests to use. The kitchen area was very useful. In fact having a kitchen with a nice fridge is now something I do consider when staying somewhere. This lets me buy food when I’m out and then store it the fridge. You can then reheat it if you want to. The only problem was with the kettle which didn’t automatically switch off. There must have been a manufacturing fault, so we had it swapped out and it was fine. The sitting area was more than substantial, but the tv… well there were only a couple of channels. They were either in Malay or Mandarin so if you don’t speak either of these two, you will need to find your entertainment elsewhere. Mini Trip Report: Bangkok April 2017
I want to start this trip report by thanking everyone that is supporting both my posts on my blog but also reading me in other media. I really appreciate the feedback you give me. The more feedback you give the better the blogs will be.

Other Mini Trip Reports Mini Trip Report: Penang February 2017 I have not been to Thailand for a long time. Last time was in June 2016, and I flew Singapore Airlines, as I was doing on this trip. Though I am unlikely to fly Singapore Airlines to Bangkok for the rest of this year as I found a cheap business class deal on Cathay Pacific, which is also a direct flight, but also I get my BA tier points. If I make a few trips every year, this will make re-qualifying for Silver so much easier. The flight was early, 9.30 am, so it meant getting up and ready to leave by 7ish. I wanted to get to the JetQuay private terminal with plenty of time to spare. JetQuay Private Terminal This was not the first time I have used the JetQuay. That honour goes to my flight on BA16 from Singapore Changi to London Heathrow in December 2016. In fact, as some of you will have read before, access to the JetQuay terminal was one of the reasons I selected the Citi Prestige card (See Which Reward Card do I use?). As I have written about this before, I won’t go over again too much. One thing I didn’t mention in my previous report as how cold it gets in the terminal. It was so chilly. I spent most of my life in a cold climate and this was still cold!! Rather than go for a tourist deal, I just topped up with THB150 and used that for my long weekend. I can’t remember the prices. I’ll reuse it when I come back in about a month. Finally on the Airport Rail Link. I’ve written a detailed guide: A guide to using the Airport Rail Link from Suvarnabhumi Airport to central Bangkok (published in 2015 but still very helpful, if I do say so myself:)) The only additional information I would add is that if you want to change your money, do it at the basement level of the airport. Previous places I have stayed at include Grand Mercure Bangkok Asoke Residence, Arcadia Suites, Oakwood Residence Sukhumvit 24 and Centre Point Hotel, Chidlom. There are many positives and negatives with these various hotels, but overall I enjoyed staying at most of them. I decided to stay at the Courtyard by Marriott, Bangkok, not because it offered a great deal, but mainly because it offered a points earning opportunity that I want to take advantage of. Having become relatively well acquainted with frequent flyer programs, I thought it was time to progress to hotel programs. Google Maps suggests that from the airport, you should go to Chidlom BTS station and walk…. error!! It is a long walk. Especially if you are dragging luggage. By the time I got to the hotel I was drenched. Fortunately the check in was smooth and swift. After being quickly directed to my room, I had to jump in the shower. And will also pick you up. I was never sure on the pick up points nor the times so I only actually used the BTS pick up once. Now, there are some of you out there who list “riding a tuk-tuk” as part of the Bangkok experience. Don’t pick one up off the side of the road. Most hotels now have this service, so just hop on. These came from both morning and night time so you will notice lighting differences. Generally I was pretty impressed. The quality was good and plentiful. It’s amazing how dynamics can change depending on the people at the restaurant. The first morning (Sunday) it was really calm, not much more than a gentle hum. The second morning (Monday), there was a large tour group. And they were really loud. I realise for some of you first timers, this may not be enough for you, so I recommend looking at my previous post Sightseeing in and around Bangkok. It’s not comprehensive. Far from it. It gives you some ideas as to where to go and see. The airport is quite far from the city. So give yourself at least 30mins. As this was a public holiday traffic was light. Alternatively, take the Airport Rail Link. Getting followers here and on Instagram really keeps me motivated to write the reports. #ladwhotravels✈️ #mytravelinglife�� My last trip to Bangkok as well as being my last Mini Trip Report (Mini Trip Report: Bangkok April 2017), and it’s partly because it’s a city I am reasonably familiar with. Though to be honest I hadn’t thought of going again, had I not seen a special offer to Bangkok flying Cathay Pacific on Business class for something like S$500. Given then some economy tickets are about half the price, I would be getting business class comfort while also getting my tier points for the flight. This would entitle me to using the Cathay Business Class lounge at Changi. However, this meant that I had to make a choice: Do I use Cathay’s designated lounge, or would I use the Priority Pass, or would I use JetQuay [I talk about it detail in my report Jetquay CIP Terminal Review – an unnecessary luxury?]. Actually what this really meant, was would I use the Dnata lounge or JetQuay, as the Dnata lounge is also the lounge used by Cathay Pacific for its designated business class travelers. Cathay probably don’t want to invest in a new lounge at Terminal 1 as they are expecting to move to the newly constructed Terminal 4 in Q3 2017. Usually it would be a no brainer. I would always use JetQuay if I could. However, given that I am paying for my business class ticket, I wanted to make sure that I was getting my money’s worth out of it. I have also used both and actually quite enjoyed using the Plaza Premium lounge (I first used it on BA16 from Singapore Changi to London Heathrow in December 2016). It does in fact seem a bit of a hassle taking the JetQuay buggy service – first world problems!!! This also wasn’t the first time I flew Cathay Pacific to Bangkok. I actually flew back in November 2015, when I got a good deal. Cathay used to have deals every so often. Now they seem to have deals quite frequently. The night before the flight I was still in two minds about whether I should get to the airport just in time, or with plenty of time to spare. In the end I woke up at 7 am just got up and once I was ready, left for the airport. By this time, it was about 10am. Why so long between getting up and leaving you might ask? Well I decided to have a bite to eat at home first, and then I started messing about with the packing, which made everything more and more delayed. Anyway, as I was packing, I checked Uber and saw that it was only about $1.5o to the MRT station, and then the MRT is only about $2 to Changi so I thought, that seems like such a bargain, especially since I was so ahead of schedule. Sure enough I checked my total fare for the journey was under $4. Amazing!!!! I mentioned this in one of my earliest posts in 2016 [(Idiot’s) Guide to the Singapore Mass Rapid Transit (MRT)], that when you are coming or going from Changi Airport on the East West Line, the trains do not go all the way. You will need to get off at Tanah Merah station (2 stops from Changi), cross over the platform to get on the other train (depending which direction you are going). I was busy shopping and running errands, that for some reason, I only managed to go for a massage once during my 3 night stay. There are plenty of “happy ending” massage parlours, but I am not looking for that. I want the traditional Thai massage, and while it may not be the cheapest, I pretty much always go to Health Land. This is chain, and there are a number of branches in Bangkok. This trip, I went to the Asoke branch. A traditional Thai massage will cost THB550 for 2 hours (about US$16, £12, S$22). Minimum order is 3 shirts (I think), and there is a price range that suits most tastes. I didn’t order anything but shirts, so can’t comment on their suit making. They also make shoes, but I’m not 100% certain I would buy shoes from them. Most likely I will write a separate review on this shop. Mini Trip Report: Phnom Penh June 2017

This is my fourth Mini Trip Report. Hope you guys like them. Though I confess that I will eventually write more about these separate portions of the trip in other posts. Phnom Penh is not somewhere that I’ve covered previously and is thus worth separate posts. I thought readers would want to see my my quick takes on the city. Please do let me know what you think. I would also encourage you to follow me on Instagram. Getting followers here and on Instagram really keeps me motivated to write the reports. My last trip to Bangkok as well as being my last Mini Trip Report (Mini Trip Report: Bangkok May 2017), and it’s partly because it’s a city I am reasonably familiar with. This time I couldn’t use JetQuay as I had done during my British Airways BA16 from Singapore to London in December 2016 or the weekend Trip from Singapore to Bangkok in April 2017 [you can see my detailed report in Jetquay CIP Terminal Review – an unnecessary luxury?]. This was because I had was travelling a low cost carrier for this trip (Jetstar), and JetQuay doesn’t really deal with LCCs. I’m not too sure why that is, maybe because the LCCs have such strict requirements for luggage weight, cabin baggage, so it might be difficult to police. Anyone have any ideas? So no private terminal for me this trip. But have no fear, as my regular readers will know, I also have a Citi Prestige card, which gives me access to Priority Pass Lounges in most airport across the world. Bear in mind the big advantage with the Citi Prestige card over other Citi rewards cards is that the lounge access for Citi Prestige is unlimited. Whereas for the other cards (like Premier Miles) you are limited to a certain number of lounge entries every year. I took the MRT from the Singapore CBD, this time using the Downtown Line to Bugis, and then switching to the East West Line. As usual, when travelling to Changi Airport on the East West Line, the trains do not go all the way. There are visa forms waiting for you in the arrivals hall. Just fill it all out and hand it to the waiting officers who are seated next to each other. They pass it along, each stamping it on the way to the end, and then there is a payment counter. $30. Easy. Finally, you need to make your way through customs. This simply involves handing over the customs declaration. Because I didn’t check in any luggage, I was able to go straight through the luggage carousels and out to meet my ride to the hotel. iRoha Garden Hotel & Resort This is my first time to Phnom Penh, though not my first time to Cambodia. Whenever I am looking for places to stay, I always ask for recommendations, and with the advent of trip advisor it has made searching so much easier. After much searching and debate, I decided to stay at iRoha Garden Hotel & Resort. This was not exactly a hard decision in the end. And I was pretty sad to be leaving the iRoha Hotel, but all good things must come to an end! The staff recommended leaving the hotel 3 hours before the flight as traffic is unpredictable. I booked a car, but I could have probably booked a tuk tuk instead. But rather than arrive hot and sweaty, I went for the expensive (and airconditioned) option. The airport has apparently undergone a recent face lift. Actually a pretty respectable airport. I was really hungry by this point and wanted to eat, so no photos of the rest of the airport. The lounge was pretty amazing. Huge! When I got there, there was no more passengers at the gate. Shock! I rushed on board, and thought I was the last person. Crazy! I spent most of the time asleep as I knew I had to work the next day. I hadn’t pre-ordered food so didn’t bother staying up. When we landed, we were parked at a far gate but it’s always good to have a walk after a sleep on a plane. Changi was busy, but I guess that’s good for the Singapore economy. As soon as I got through immigration I got on Uber and booked a ride out of the airport….. until the next adventure! Until next trip!!!!! i think that was one of the new 737max.
penang, i must return perhaps not on a february next time...all the good cooks seemed to have been away when i went there last feb. so did you find the food as good as it is often touted to be? so far kl has been the best food experience for me in malaysia, with kk next and penang third best.

The beds were quite comfortable, although a bit basic. Also, this room was not en-suite. In fact having a kitchen with a nice fridge is now something I do consider when staying somewhere. This lets me buy food when I’m out and then store it the fridge. You can then reheat it if you want to. The only problem was with the kettle which didn’t automatically switch off. My opinion is that Penang is the best place for food in Malaysia. But like a lot of places, it is about knowing the right nooks and crannies to eat at. For example, I don't generally rate Singapore food that highly, but there are some places that are exceptional (and still reasonably priced). Advice for Penang

Mini Trip Report: Bangkok July 2017

The last few months have been totally crazy for me for travelling. I’ve been to Bangkok twice, Penang, Phnom Penh and Bali once. And this is my first Mini Trip Reports of H2 2017. The last trip I made to Bangkok in May (Mini Trip Report: Bangkok May 2017) was using Cathay Pacific business class. However, because this was going to be a very short weekend trip, I decided to fly Singapore Airlines again, as I did in April (Mini Trip Report: Bangkok April 2017). This trip comes off the back of my short trip to Bali earlier in July (Mini Trip Report: Bali July 2017). Unfortunately, this was a very very short trip, so like the Bali trip, I won’t have a huge amount to talk about. Instead I will populate with as many photos as possible. Many of you already know the route, but below is the estimated journey from Singapore to Bangkok and return. I’m introducing the use of this map, to add a bit more perspective to the journey. This time I wanted to try a different hotel in a different location, so went with the ibis Bangkok Siam. I selected it because it’s near a BTS station – National Stadium BTS – and also it’s walking distance to Siam, where you can find Siam Center, Siam Paragon and Siam Discovery. I wrote about this previously a couple of years back – you can see my review here. Mah Boon Krong or MBK as it is known among regulars is one of the large shopping malls in Bangkok. When you visit here you will see a mix of both locals as well as tourists who are looking for good deals and wide choices. Bangkok has been experiencing a mall building boom of late but many of these new malls are typically more upmarket and cater less to the ordinary tourist. Mah Boon Krong is one of the older malls (opened in the mid 1980s) and hence the target audience is not at the top end of the shopping spectrum. It is very close to Siam Square and you can get there by BTS Skytrain at the National Stadium. It is also apparently within walking distance of Siam station but I have never gone from there so I can’t really say. At National Stadium BTS, you need to take Exit 4 to MBK Center. MBK really needs a whole day to wander around, there are shops, restaurants, massage shops, electronic vendors and trinket sellers. There are the standard shops and also there is a bazaar. Every time I go to Bangkok, I try to make it for a massage at least once. I was busy shopping and running errands, that for some reason, I onl managed to go for a massage once during my 3 night stay (you can read all about my Healthland review here). A traditional Thai massage will cost THB550 for 2 hours (about US$16, £12). Mini Trip Report: Penang April 2019
Sorry for taking so long to post another trip report. Maintain photos on flickr was getting a bit cumbersome/tiresome, so I've decided to go straight to video.
These are super basic so I apologise to anyone who is expecting something really amazing videos. I'll accompany each video with some commentary and locations of places I've been. This trip to Penang was just to get enjoy some great food and catch up with acquaintances. The flight was on SilkAir but wasn't a 737 Max as those are currently banned from operating into and out of Singapore. My credit card gives me a Priority Pass card (+1), so I went to the Green Market, which is in Terminal 2 – the same terminal that SilkAir departs from. It was late when I arrived so no food on the first night. I ate breakfast at the Pulau Tikus market (at Kedai Kopi Swee Kong) - this is somewhere I go quite regularly and if possible I go every time for the Hokkien mee and then a couple of shop front along the way I have the sui gao. Then for lunch I had some lor bak and chendol in Georgetown, on Jalan Lorong Selamat. I think the shop is originally called Kepai Kopi dan Ice Kacang (coffe and ice kacang shop). For dinner, it was the beachcorner seafood restaurant at Batu Ferringhi. The next day I had sim sum lunch at Fur Er Dai at Jalan Sultan Ahmad Shah Afterwards I headed back to the airport for my flight to Singapore Hope you enjoy the video I realise these videos are quite basic, but if you do enjoy seeing them I'd really appreciate if you would subscribe to my YouTube channel.
