MCO-JFK on Song
Hiya!
I haven't seen a trip report yet on Song so I thought I would post mine. I've enjoyed lurking here for quite a while reading everyones various trip reports and thinking about how cool it would be to do all these mileage runs. I unfortunatly don't get to fly for business so any thing I do usually is for other non-mileage getting purposes. I try to maximize my mileage with as many segments as possible and I love seeing new airports and planes whenever possible. (I knew I had a problem when I paid an extra $20 for a flight from lax-mco just so I could have a stop over in SLC which I had never been to
)
Anyways... Enough rambling.. on with the report
5/11/03 SONG 2490
MCO-JFK - Seat 4A
Ugh. 7am. Always tough for me to wake up that early but I made a sacrifice both in the time that I flew out and the airport I flew into (EWR would have made my plans easier) in order to fly on the 2nd day of operation out of MCO for Delta's new low cost brand SONG! (Ta-Da!). Made my way to MCO with more than enough time to spare and noticed that even though it was only the second day of operation songs name was already in all the right places.. On the terminal roadway sign, at the pull-up departure area and also it had it's own ticketing area. Cool! I got my first look at the new colors and costumes on the agents and grabed a handfull of Song bagage tags as I did my eticket check-in.
I personally enjoy MCO as an airport.. I grew up flying out of MIA and FLL so MCO is a breath of fresh air to me. I love the open, airy feel and how easy it is to get around, it is a tourist airport and is designed as such, very easy with lots of signs. I made my way to gate 74 which is one of the new song branded gates and was plesantly supprised to see the area decorated with ballons and welcome signs from the innaugrial day yesterday. I also got quite a few confused looks as I took some photos of the area.
Boarding was quick and painless and done by ZONES, I was zone 2 and was one of the first to board. My seat 4a was in the old first class section on this rebranded 757. Thus with more seats there was not enough room for baggage with the overhead compartments that were left over. I got mine in but about 1/2 the other folks had to sling there bags to the 2nd half of the plane. The plane actually looks very nice in it's new greens and blues color tones. The seats have the same leather feel as jet blue although it feels kinda cobbled together. Looking around the plane you could very easily see what parts were replaced and what parts were not. (armrests=old seats=new some wall pannels=old some= new!!) very confusing. The plane was almost 100% full which was very confusing since when I booked it 2 weeks before I had almost the full run of the plane to chose my seats. Weird.. Perhaps the consolodated some other flights. The first thing I noticed was most folks seemed kinda confused that they were not on a delta flight, but a few questions to the FA's calmed their questions. I also noticed that in the seat pocket there was a menu with various food selections and also the song branded emergency folder.. No magazine!
We had a smooth take off right on time and the FA's begain to distribute the gameboys that wil have to do until they recieve their in flight entertainement system. They made an announcement that they would only give them to adults if the kids all got theirs and since the kids outnumbered the adults on this flight, I missed out.. Oh well! The FA's then started what seemed to be a theme throughout the flight - Calling themselves "Talent" instead of FA's and also repeating jokes that seemed as if they were being read of a card. Admittidly this is only the second day of this route but SWA's jokes work because they are natural. These were the most uptight FA's (oh... i'm sorry.. TALENT) you have ever seen trying to joke.. very strange.
Menu's were now distributed to those folks who didn't have one.. (I took another.. needed one for my collection!) and the meal service was ready to begin. Drinks are comp but you have to pay for your food on song. It was pre- 9:30 so breakfast was being served.. Plus snacks from the snack cart are always available at a nominal charge. Prices are below.
BREAKFAST - Until 9:30 am
Cinnabon Coffee Cake $3
Wild Blueberry Muffin $3
Lender's Plain Bagel w/ Cream Cheese $3
Stonyfield Farms Organic Yogurt $1
Yoplait Yogurt $1
Fresh, Organic, Seasonal Fruit $1
Lunch and Dinner - Starting at 9:30 (9:30?!?!? ...!?!)
Pizzeria Uno Roast Beef Wrap $7
Virginia Baked Ham $7
Roasted Turkey $7
Greek Salad $7
Garden Salad With Chicken $7
Snacks
Pringles $2
Fig Newtons $1
Mrs Fields Cookies $2
Snickers $2
Skttles $2
Peanut Butter and Grape Jelly Sandwich $2
Various alcohol was also listed at the normal prices.
I opted for the Cinnabun "Coffee Cake".. Now.. we have all had coffee cake before... This was NOT coffee cake.. this was a Cinnabun Mini Bun like what you would get in a mall food court but ice cold and really really gooey with 1 little beverage napkin to clean up.. (just as a warning of course!) I got that along with my obligitory coke and noticed most of the folks in the cabin were confused by the food ordering process..Most folks seemed to get bagles if anything but I think I was the only one who was acutally excited to pay for food!
The FA's had iPAQ's that they carried around with them to ring up the food and I believe process credit cards (although when asked they were not sure but they thought so ) and that was quite interesting. They were having lot's of trouble ringing anyone up who wanted to buy food and eventually gave up ringing a few rows down from me.
The flight continued uneventfully with the exception of a few more stilted jokes including one about sending lost items to ebay to sell them and we landed about 15 mintues early and then spent 15 mintues taxing to the gate.. Gotta love JFK. The FA's made one last announcement asking to please help them clean up so they could turn over the plane quicker and keep prices low and we deboarded. I took a few more pictures of JFK's song terminal which is all dolled up in the song greens and blues and made my way out into the cold.
Thanks for reading!

Thanks! Of course I got the DL miles.. I wouldn't have done it if I didn't
Although I probably wouldn't fly again until their inflight entertainment system is working unless the flight is A LOT cheaper than a comparable DL flight..I lose miles by having a direct flight too
..This was an open jaw flight for me.. The way back was out of ALB so it was the cheap way to go.
I would say out of my area of 25 folks I could see, 25-30% purchased something. I suppose the total might be higher during the dinner hours. The concept seem to confuse quite a few of the pax and I suppose until it becomes more mainstream it will continue to.

Thanks for this detailed trip report on Delta's Song. While the service you describe is the currently the exception, ten years from now it may well be the rule amongst US domestic carriers.

I agree, the lunch choices seemed to be a little over priced, as were the candy bars, but I think the muffins and yogurts were priced well. It looks like they need to improve the lunch choices to, i didnt see anything on there that looked to appetizing.
