CO/ EWR-FLL

April 23rd
CO 1601 737-800
3:45 pm
Seat: 2E

My time in NY was over, and it was time to move on. I left for EWR at about 1:30 pm, and was at the curb by 2:45 with my online boarding pass in hand. I had never been to the check-in area of Terminal C in EWR, and decided to take a look around before going through security. I noticed that the e-service machines were EVERYWHERE! Everywhere you turn in EWR, an e-service machine in right in front of you. I was kind of upset I had not waited, and checked in at a kiosk so that I could do something with my spare time. At 2:50 pm, I proceeded to the security checkpoint for the 100-120 gates. My departure gate was C94, but since there was no express security line at the C75-99 entrance, I decided to enter here. It would be a longer walk, but I didnt mind.

I entered the security line, behind 3 other groups. The 2 men in front of me got to the front, and the TSA agent gave them a hard time because one of the men was not in first class and she refused to let him through. She could barely speak English, and when I reached the front I showed my ID and BP without any problems. After getting through her, I had to wait in another line of 5 groups. EWR security is very slow, and it took me 15 min to clear. Once through, I made my way to the gate.

As I reached C94, and announcement was made that food WOULD NOT be served on the flight in either F/C or coach. I already knew this before the flight, and was really bummed out about it. I had written a complaint letter to CO ahead of time about this. I thought about going to McDonalds, but it was 3:07 and I didnt think there would be enough time. At 3:12 pm, boarding was called starting with F/C. The agent scanned my BP, and I was off. Upon entering the aircraft, a smiling FA greeted me, and after finding my seat, pre-departure drinks were offered. I noted that the FA did not offer to take coats, unless someone handed it to him.

Before pushback, the FA came around and took dinner orders. Dinner? I thought there was no meal. I'm not sure if my letter made any difference in the situation, but I was happy to be getting fed. The choices were vegetarian lasagna, or sandwich, and a salad was also offered on request. I chose the sandwich, with the salad, and a coke. First class checked in almost full, with 1 empty seat. After pushback, we taxied out and took off. It was a windy day in the NYC area, and the turbulence after take-off was bad. When we reached our cruising altitude, the seat belt sign was turned off, and the FA came on to say that a movie was offered, Analyze That. A movie from EWR-FLL? This flight was getting better by the minute.

Headsets were distributed, followed by hot towels. Those were collected, and smokehouse almonds were handed out WITHOUT drinks. Im a big fan of these smokehouse almonds, but theyre too salty to eat without a drink. Drinks were finally brought out, followed by the meals. No linens given. The meal was presented on 1 tray all at once. The dressing for the salad was Greek vinaigrette. The sandwich was on rye bread, with pastrami and Swiss cheese. Coleslaw, and a pickle were also on the plate, but no pecan delight. I had the salad first, which was phenomenal, followed by the sandwich. The sandwich was fantastic, and I love CO coleslaw. The meal was very good, and what I thought was going to be a big disappointment with no meal, turned out to be one of the best meals I ever had on an airplane. The tray was cleared away, and another coke was offered. As I sipped my coke I watched Analyze That for the 4th time in 2 months, COs really got to change the movie. The FA came around once more, this time offering dessert! Another question mark was left on my face. I thought CO had gotten rid of desserts, and only served pecan delights (except on trans-cons). The choice was a turtle cheesecake. I accepted with open arms, and milk. The cheesecake was presented on a plate with my glass of milk, and I must say, this was one of the best desserts I ever had in my life! The cheesecake had pecans inside, with caramel topping, and Oreo cookie crust. Unfortunately, due to the size, I finished it off rather quickly. My plate was cleared away, and the FA asked if there was anything else I wanted, and I declined.

The staff was not phenomenal but acceptable. While friendly, he did not offer refills during dinner, and did not offer to take coats prior to pushback.

For those of you who are not familiar with the CO domestic F seat the width is 21, pitch is a measly 38, with black leather upholstery, and an adjustable headrest. I find the seats comfy, and up to standards for domestic F product. Our descent was announced over Melbourne, and we touched down at 6:37 pm on 9L. We taxied to C-2 and I deplaned.

I was very very very pleased with the flight. CO stunned me with the meal, and Id like to think that my letter made the difference. Who says Continental doesnt care about there customers?

I almost forgot to mention. I spotted a NW 727 depart EWR at about 3:08 pm. I thought NW retired these. Anyone know what it was doing at EWR?

Boy I love surprises like that - YEAH for Continental.

I never had problems with them when I flew them exclusively many moons ago.

Glad to hear you had a yummy meal & a movie to boot!

Blessings

You neglected to mention the date, but if it was recently, it was an NBA charter, taking the NJ Nets to MKE (as I recall) for the playoffs.
