AF LAX-CDG RT

Flew 777 business class on AF from LAX to CDG on July 6. Flight was very empty. Noticed that FC had only 2 of 12 occupied and BC was maybe 20% occupied. Most other airlines have 2-2-2 seating in BC on the 777 while AF has 2-3-2. I would be seriously upset if I got stuck in the middle seat. IMHO, there should be no middle seats in BC/FC. Anyway, flight was fine, food and wine choice excellent. I'm only 6' tall but felt the seat did not recline/fit me very well.

Return trip on July 19. Our incoming flight was a little late so we made it to the gate at CDG about 5 minutes prior to them shutting the doors. Gate attendant informed us that we both had been upgraded to FC! Nice surprise especially after the stress of trying to make the flight. This time flight was full. All 12 seats of FC occupied and noticed at least 95% in BC. This FC seat was great! FA was very friendly and did her job very well. Food and wine selection was perfect. Changed in the PJs 2 hours after take off and slept for about 5 hours in a fully reclined seat. One could get very used to this level of comfort and service.

Which airlines besides DL and CO have 2-2-2 in business class on the 777 ? I know AA and UA have 2-3-2 and I think BA does as well. I think (but I could be wrong) that the only airlines with 2-2-2 seating are those which do not offer a first class product.

BA's flat business class seats are arranged 2-4-2 on the 777s. The older cradle seats are arranged 2-3-2. I think the 2-4-2 sounds worse than it is as the seats are arranged in such a way that only two face in the same direction and the seating area is wider than the footrest area.

US Airways flies the 777? That's news to me!

Northwest had 2-2-2 on their DC10s (similar cabin width as the 777).

US does *not* fly the 777 -- the 330 and the 767-200 are the only widebodies in their fleet -- and yes, their C-class is 2-2-2 in both planes. Both the 330 and the 767 are narrower than the 777. (2-3-2 in an Airbus widebody would be really tight ; IIRC LH used this configuration in their earliest 340s but switched later to 2-2-2)

NW does not have an international F- (or P-)class product. If they did, their C-class on the DC-10 would probably be 2-3-2, just as it's 2-3-2 in C-class on most carriers' MD-11s.

AC has 1-2-2 (or 2-2-1) in their Executive First (J) class cabin on their 767-300ER. The single seats are great!
