SYD-KUL Bed Run
Left Syd Fri afternoon on OS from SYD-KUL.
Checked in the *A gold checkin desk, no luck getting an exit row seat (row 11 or 32) in Y. Was given a comp pass into the NZ lounge in SYD, but as a *A gold you get it anyway, nice memento though (the pass).
NZ lounge is very big, I can see why many ppl in the NZ forum count the SYD NZ lounge as NZ's best. Lots of space, iPaqs with high speed net, good range of foods, alchohols and comfortable seating.
In contrast the Kris Flyer (SQ) lounge is small and very busy, they too have 2 PC's with net access. Food selection is much more limited in the Syd SQ lounge.
Unfortunately the Syd UA lounge was closed, closes around 2:30 or 3pm after the last UA flight leaves for LAX or SFO.
Flight was delayed, OS couldn't get lighting to work on the inside of the aircraft, after close to a 45 min delay, plane took off. Landed late into KILA, causing me to miss a connecting Putra train to Asia Jaya (the nearest LRT stop to Hilton Petaling Jaya).
Hilton PJ is an old hilton, with some refurbished rooms. Rate was RM258 (about AUD$130/night or US$70/night inclusive of tax/service charges). Was upgraded to exec floor, exec floors are in the east wing, half of level 18 and then 19,20,21. You do not want a room on Level 21, some floor as the clubroom as the rooms are old, smaller and un-refurbished, go for a room on Level 18 or 19. I always prefer to get a room on the same floor as the club room, typically in asia i've found these rooms are also the smoking rooms.
Checked and really enjoyed the room, bed, space. Included all the hilton nick nacks that help comfort, 1.5 litre bottle complimentary water, fruit, robes (3), double shampoo and body wash, crystals for the tub (though here they put it into a permanent glass container, not a disposable), scales, work desk, 2 phones, tv with cable, etc.
The club room for breakfast was nice and included salmon, still not as nice as the hilton singapore clubrooms for breakfast. range of sausages, scambled eggs, cheeses, fruits (including dragon fruit) and all the ususal bits and pieces).
Evening canapes in the lounge include chocolates, cheeses (though no blue cheese or brie), fruits, some asian bits and pieces and some cakes. Nice, although not that good compared to the old Hilton in KL where they also served satays and noodles for evening canapes, very nice.
Parking is included if you have a car.
Took the train to Seremban (from KL Sentral), taking the KTMB (Kommuter), cost is RM5.40 (around A$2.50 or US$1.40), it is a 70 min train ride and roughly the train leaves every 20 mins, sharp, stops for 15-20 secs and is off. Slow on the way out of the city, but once out, it zooms. Bring a jacket as the a/c can get very cold on the train.
Train is modern and only 1 class. Good cushioning on the seats. Didn't check for a toilet on the train.
Got into Seremban - the Hilton is a 5 min walk up a hill, past an A&W and a Parkson Grand shopping centre.
You can either walk if you don't have much luggage or you can grab a taxi. Taxi ride would cost you more than RM3 or A$1.40 or US$0.80c or so.
Hilton Seremban was nice, booked for RM142.50/night (AU$65/night or US$35/night). Was upgraded to the exec floor (clubroom level 10, was on that level). Ask for a room facing the lobby entrance side as the view is wonderful, rooms on the other side have ugly views).
Room is modern but unlike what was said on hilton.com, has no "2 phone isdn lines". The hotel is only about 1 1/2 years old (opened oct 2000), club room doesn't serve breakfast in the morning, during the day the staff are not helpful and do not even offer a drink, and the only drink there was water or tea/coffee. Missed out on evening canapes when i was there.
The beds are very hard, but surprisingly very very comfortable when u wake up in the morning. TVs have cnn and cnbc.
Free parking is available (park where u want in the carpark), nice pool area, the breakfast down in asiatique was pretty bad. The fitness centre is still not open and is in a very awkward area which is hard to find.
A taxi from Hilton Seremban to the Airport will set you back about RM70-RM120 depending on the time of day. This equates to A$30-55 or US$18-30 and allow 40 mins without traffic although its all motorway in most parts there.
Took the OS flight back, missed out on a row 11 or row 32 seat sadly, but got an exit row, the flight was packed from VIE already. Virtually no empty seats on the flight. The food was exactly the same as I got on travelling on the flight 5 weeks earlier, snapper with potatos and profiteroes.
Over and out,
Kawoh.
