My sort-of mileage run to SIN

This is my first trip report, so bear with me. I tried to talk my wife into going on a mileage run to SIN, with a 7 hour lay over and then a return. She said she'd only fly that much if she actually got to see the place. So we compromised on a trip with 3 full days in Singapore.

We arrived at SeaTac at about 7am for our 9am flight to LAX. My wife and I budgetted the recommended 2 hours, having not flown since 9/11, and not knowing what to expect. Lines were fairly long everywhere, but eventually started moving. Waited in the PremEx line for about 20 minutes before getting to the front and checked in.

Security to get into the North Satelite Terminal was fairly backed up also. The two lines stretched past the currency exchange booth. While my wife held a spot in line, I got some yen and Singaporean dollars. Got to the front of the line fifteen minutes later, and spent about 5 minutes getting a very thorough check with the handheld metal detector. The lady doing it asked me to loosen my belt and roll down the top part of my jeans. I thought about balking at this, but didn't want to get kicked out of the airport, so I just gave her an annoyed look.

Went to the RCC club and asked if my 9am flight was oversold (figured it was as the inventory went from all 9s to zeroed out about a day after I bought the ticket). Asked to be placed on the VDB list as I knew that their were plenty of seats for us to be rebooked on the SEA-NRT flight.

10/12 9am UA 1937 SEA-LAX
B757, Seats 15B & 15C
After hanging out in the RCC club, went up to the gate (N2 I think, but my memory is a little foggy), where the gate area was a zoo, and the line stretched well past the 1K Room. Waited around for the painfully obvious announcement that the flight was over sold. When it came, they said they were offering $600 for folks to get off the flight and take a later one. I wandered up to the counter to verify the I was on the VDB list and mention I was only connecting in LAX, and would be happy to take the direct flight to NRT. (I had booked going through LAX originally to get more miles and have Y+ on the 747). They said that was cool and asked me to sit tight.

After the flight had left, they started rebooking the VDBs. While the gate agent was rebooking us, another one was helping this lady who was going postal. She was shouting and getting pissed because she thought she would be getting rebooked to arrive in LAX at 1:30, when actually it was to be at 4:30 (In all fairness, because of the confusion and crowds around the gate, conflicting info had been passed out). She was totally pissed and was not at all consoled by the fact that she was getting $600 in travel vouchers. She demanded getting double miles for the trip also. At this point, I'm thinking:

a) she's making a total fool of herself.
b) she's making a fit about wanting double miles on 954 mile trip.

They rebook her on the flight arrive at 4:30, and give her an additional $100 voucher. She gets pissed saying she'd rather have the miles and is hacked that because it wasn't in the same book as the $600 it wasn't combinable.

I barely resist the temptation of chewing her out. After she's gone, our gate agent was able to finish rebooking us (since he was helping his partner). While he was processing our vouchers, I chatted with him about how hard it must be for flight planning and yield management to try to perdict loads on flights and avoid situations like this flight, and he agreed and said pretty much everything was a surprise these days. He gave us both our vouchers and rebooked us on UA 875 SEA-NRT at 12:30 where we would then connect with our orignal LAX-NRT-SIN UA 897. I asked if our flights were upgradable. I knew that they weren't (Q fare), but was hoping for a miracle as all the good seats in coach on the 777 were gone (With no Y+, only 30AB, and 30HJ are any good). He said they weren't but did mention that was a promotional going on where V and W fares were upgradable for 30,000 miles, but only if they are purchased from UA Vacations - this bit came as a surpise for me as I had never heard of international V and Ws being upgraded with miles at all. Thanked him for his help, wished him a better day, and headed down to RCC.

10/12 12:30pm UA 875 SEA-NRT
B777, seats 33F & 33G

Boarding process was fairly uneventful. They called F cabin first, which only 1 person preboarded for - that can't bode well for their revenues. Next was Business and Star Gold, at which point there was a scrum to get to the gate. Made it back to our seats and proceeded to squeeze my 6 foot 1, 240 pound frame in to the 32 inch pitched seat for the 10 hour flight. Didn't get a picture of how full business and first were during the flight, but I'd say that coach was about 60%. The one advantage to getting rebooked on the direct SEA-NRT flight is that as a 777, it has in seat video. However the selection sucked so I read a book the whole way. One nice thing was that on our meal trays, there were coupons for 15% off tickets for a future United flight.

Got to NRT about 30 minutes late (we had stronghead winds of 200mph at one point), cleared security and went to the RCC where I got to see the famed beer machine for the first time and do some plane watching. Never seen so many widebodies (mostly 747 and 777, with a few MD-11s thrown in) in one place before.

Headed down to the gate about 20 minuted before boarding started for our next flight. Down there, I met MileTex and chatted for him a bit. He came in on the ORD-NRT flight and said that there was an unrulely passenger who had to be subdued and was met by the police at NRT. Apparently if the incident had happened 20 or 30 minutes early the plane would have diverted to Alaska.

10/13 5:45pm UA 897 NRT-SIN
B747, seats 46H & 46J

This was my first trip to Asia, and I had been hopeing that by the time I got to NRT, that it would be all downhill. What a fool I was. This 7.5 hour flight, right after the 10.5 SEA-NRT flight was exhausting. Not sure how I would have done had I flown the original LAX-NRT instead, but I'm sure it would have been worse. We had exit row for this which helped. But it sure seemed like a long flight.

Got into SIN about 11:30pm, about 20 minutes early. Cleared immigration just fine and went to baggage claim and waited and waited, watching the belt go around. No joy. Went over to SATS baggage claim office, filled out a missing bag form, and told them to look for our bag in LAX. Probably got dropped from the flight due to PPBM. Asked about spending allowance to get some clothes and toiletries (I wasn't looking forward to spending the next day in Singapore in Jeans and unshaven - I had packed my razor in the suitcase because I didn't want it confiscated) and was told that we'd have to call back in the morning as UA had left for the night. Left my suitcase key with them so they could have my baggage clear customs when it arrived and send it to my hotel.

Hired a taxi and got to Traders Hotel off Orchard Road where we were staying. Checked in, and went up to our room. Two problems:

1) no light in the room
2) two twin beds, not a king size as I had reserved and was told at checkin.

Went back downstairs and mentioned both. They told me that we had to put our room key in a slot beside the door to enable power to our room. At this point I felt dumb, because I have stayed in places like this before, but due to travel weariness and the fact that the room was so dark, we didn't see it or think to look for it. The check in clerk re-assigned us to a different room which was fine. Got to the room and was asleep within 2 minutes.

Sunday 10/14

In the morning, we called SATS baggage back and asked them what our allowance was. The checked with UA and said $50. I was too tired to ask if that was USD or S$ and whether that was each or total, but decided I didn't care enought to call back and clarify it. we went down to the good buffet breakfast included in our room rate (S$178 a night, about $100USD). Asked the conceirge where we could find some clothing to get us through the day cheap. He advised us to try the Bugis Junction market, which he said would be far cheaper than Orchard Road. We wandered the market and saw some cool stuff but no clothing that would work. The only stuff I saw that would fit me were some baggy black sweat shorts with Steve Austin of the WWF silkscreened on the side. No thanks.

We went across the street to the shopping mall and had better luck, but spent about $75 US in the process - No worries, I desprately wanted out of my jeans.

Went back to the hotel, changed and hired a taxi to take us to the Asian Civilisations Museum. Pretty cool, but a focus at this point - most on the Straits Chinese. Apparently, it is moving to a new building next year, and will have more exhibits, that cover all of Asia. I'll definately want to go back once that opens.

Next went to a Hawker center for some good cheap grub. Then went to the Singapore History museum. Didn't have time to see the whole museum, so I focused on the section on traced the end of colonialism/federation with Malaysia/independence section. Very interesting stuff, although one thing I found funny was that they had a lot of clippings of articles and headlines from the Straits Times (The local newspaper). During the period that Singapore was part of Malaysia, the banner across the top of the paper always had a blurb on it saying "Malaysia's National Newspaper" - including the day of the issue announcing that Singapore was no longer part of Malaysia.

Afterwards we walked down to the Raffles long bar for dinner and Singapore slings. They were good - the first Singapore slings I've ever liked, but expensive (they price them that way because they know folks buying them are fairly price insensitive).

Went back to the hotel and called it a night.

Monday 10/15

Woke up, and had a message waiting for me that my luggage was downstairs. Had them send it up to the room, them went down and grabbed breakfast before catching the hotel shuttle to the Orchard Road MRT station. Caught the northbound train to some station I can't remember the name of, got off and waited for Bus 135 that goes to the zoo. While standing in the queue, met a really nice Singaporean man named Paul and talked with him while waiting for the bus, and for about 15 minutes of the ride until he had to get off. Swapped business cards with him and wished him a good day.

We got to the zoo and bought a joint pass for both the zoo and the night safari. Spent the next several hours wandering around the zoo despite the heat. One of the best zoos I've ever been to. It had a facinating collection of animals, particularly primates, and its animal environments and layout were very good. I took 140 pictures on my digital camera while there. (I like going to zoos when in foreign places and seeing all sorts of critters I've never seen or heard of before).

Went back to town via the bus and MRT, and tried to go to tea at the Westin Stamford. Was told that it was closed for remodeling :-(. Bummed around a bit, went to Clarke Quay for dinner and hopped on the MRT back up to catch bus 135 and see the Night Safari.

The night safari was an interesting concept. Basically its a zoo full of nocturnal animals that is only open at night. They artificial illuminate the animal habits such that it is slightly brighter than moonlight at a full moon. The result is that the animals are active because its night, but you can still see them. A cool idea. Unfortunately my digital camera sucks at taking pictures in low light situations (and a flash is obviously out of the question) so I didn't get any good photos. But glad I went.

Got back to the hotel late and turned in.

Tuesday 10/16

Was very tired this morning. Slept until almost 10, got up, had breakfast and went out to do some shopping on Orchard Road. I didn't buy anything, but my wife picked up some silk. We then had tea at Hilton, which had very good pasteries and then caught at taxi to the Botanic Gardens. Wandered around a bit and then went into the National Orchid Garden. Very beautiful and full of amazing flowers.

Went back to the hotel, went swimming, had dinner and called it an early night, because tomorrow was to be an early morning.

Wednesday 10/17

Left the hotel at 4:30, getting to the airport at 5am. Had my luggage inspected and checked in for our return flights. Got reimbursed the Singapore equivalent of US $50 for the late luggage. Cleared immigration and browsed the duty free shops, but couldn't find anything worth while.

At about 5:45am Went to the SATS Premier lounge and waited for our flight. This lounge easily put any RCC I've ever been in to shame with its food selection. Too bad it was so early in the morning. I couldn't really take advantage of it because my stomach was still asleep. Watch the news of more Anthrax stuff happening back home and headed for the gate about 6:40am.

10/17 7:35am UA 890 SIN-NRT
Seats 37J & 37K

Uneventfully flight, fairly empty, with more boring movies. Read a book and was happy that I was in Y+.

Arrived at NRT 3:00pm. Had an interesting experience at security. I set off the metal detector, so they had me empty my pockets (I only had my wallet, so it wasn't like that was setting it off). They look at my wallet, send me back through the detector, which I set off again, hand me back my wallet and send me on my way with a dumbfounded look I my face, being as I expect to be sent to a secondary screen with a handheld metal detector.

Hang out at the RCC and watch planes, wishing that the had the snacks the SATS Premier Lounge did, but console myself with the beer machine.

10/17 6:00pm UA UA 876 NRT-SEA
Seats 30H, 30J

I was expecting this to be a fairly full flight, because there are three SEA-NRT-SEA flights a day, one NW, one AA, and one UA departing NRT in that order. The AA one showed up as canceled, so I was expecting there to be a fair number of re-accomidated passengers on the UA flight, seeing as the NW one had already departed.

The flight was 50% full in coach - not sure about the front of the curtain. If there were a bunch of rebooked passengers on this flight, it must have been very empty previously.

We had the exit row seats with lots of legroom, which was nice as I needed to sleep, because I had to go to work after landing. I ordered up some booze and slept most of the flight. This plane appeared to be different than most of the 777s I had been on in the past. It didn't have reserved seats for the crew in seats 17HJ, 18HJ, etc. It had a crew rest area underneath the passenger cabin that was accessed through a door in the center just next to the flight attended seat at 30H. It appears that they removed a lavatory to create this passage way.

We got into Seattle about 30 minutes early cleared immigration and customs and were glad to be home. Next week we go to NRT and PEK for a vacation.

Editted to correct a couple of errors and add the bit about the 15% off coupon.

Very nice to read. Been to SIN some times, but the first time I went, I did more or less the same. Liked the night safari a lot, but next time you need to see the bird parc.

Try to get a stopover in SIN with SQ and you will get most of the things you did for free and very good hotel rates.

SEA-Flyer-

Great report. I'm definitely going to hit the night zoo next trip.

I went to the SATS lounge on departure on Thursday morning. I only noticed some snacks, so I headed right to the Movenpick ice cream. Never a bad time for ice cream

I am planning a mile-run to SIN. There is a good fare of $548 for SEA_NRT_SIN. I will gladly fly SEA-LAX-SIN for more miles. Can I ASK for that routing at the same $548 fare?

Thanks.

Great report. I'm currently at the NRT RCC waiting for the flight back to SEA. I'll try to get my report done on this next leg. I only got to spend a full day, have yet to hook up with 1K-SFO, should be sitting behind him on the next leg.

Yes. I booked the trip as a SEA to SIN roundtrip on ual.com and the SEA-LAX-SIN came up by default as one of the valid choices for a routing, so you should be able to book it pretty easily. If you wanted to get created you could try booking through Hawaii and get a free 22 hour stop over - something like SEA-SFO-HNL-NRT-SIN-NRT-SEA. I think you can only go through Hawaii one direction on this fair though. Check some of the other SIN threads for more info.

Was great meeting you all in NRT. Sorry I didn't talk to you on the flight to SIN but was totally wiped out. I only stayed the 7 hrs. in SIN which was OK. Transit hotel was kinda tired in appearance but it did provide at least a good 4 hrs. of sleep. Next time I'll spend two nites.
