dca-lga and back by car

For the past year I have lived in Alexandria VA on the weekends and traveled to New York for work on the weekdays. My apartment in Va is about 2 miles from the Pentagon.

Typically I stay at the Soho Grand hotel on Canal Street, within walking distance of the towers. The week prior to the 10th I stayed on the 12th floor of the Millinium Hilton right across from the WTC. I remember looking at the towers and thinking that I should go up to the observation deck the next time I was in town.

On Monday the 10th I flew the USAir shuttle up to work from DC. This week I happened to be on site at one of our stores in New Jersey. On the Morning of the 11th I started the day watching the initial attacks and fires.

As I drove to the site on Rte 3 I crossed a hill and could see the skyline of midtown Manhattan. From that angle it simply looked like a perfectly clear day that provided a wonderful view of the city. As I crossed another hill I could see the towers and smoke from the fires.

The store that I was working at had access to a roof that had a great view of the city. Occasionaly we would go up and watch the towers. At one point I saw both towers on fire. The next time I went to the roof they were gone.

In addition to the business of daily life we were consumed with the business of finding out the condition of friends and family. I gradually was able to track down everyone that I knew in DC and NY.

Because DCA had been shut down I elected to drive down to DC on Friday. As I traveled down 95 in NJ I kept looking over the river to see the place where the towers formerly were. What had been a signature of the city was now an unrecognizable stretch of skyline.

When I arrived I DC I drove through the city and saw some of the Humvees that had been stationed in the city. As I drove across the 14th street bridge I saw the Pentagon. I managed to arrive home after the most tiring commute of my life.
