George Intercontinental, Edinburgh

This stay used one of the SCC weekend night free vouchers, probably the best 35usd equivalent spend I make a year on travel.

The hotel is one block behind Princess Street, which is the main high street. There are plenty of restaurants and pubs within a few minuets walk. The street itself is quite, with fairly low traffic.

On arrival we stopped outside the hotel to ask where to park, and were directed to the free hotel car park behind. The receptionist asked our name, and said she would get our details ready. After parking the car, we went back into the hotel, and she had already checked us in, checked the room was ready (it was midday), upgraded us, and made arrangements for our water and fruit (as part of the SCC benefits) to be delivered. The only question was with the benefit we wanted as part of our rate i.e. room upgrade, extra miles, or breakfast. We went for the breakfast, which she then said was valid for both days, even the free one. I was ready for the argument on this one in case she said it wasnt, but didnt need to. Now thats what I call service ! No begging for the precious upgrade or anything. The room was very nice, and had fabulous views over the firth of forth and the mountains beyond.

The rest of the day was taken up with shopping before a visit to the Edinburgh Playhouse (about a 10min easy walk) for Saturday Night Fever. Sunday was taken up with touristy things, which we have never got around to during our many trips to the city, and included the castle (about 15mins on foot from the hotel), and some of the other places to visit along the royal mile etc. In the evening we asked the concierge for a restaurant recommendation. The restaurant he gave us was within 5 mins walk, was very good and well priced. We then visited the hotel bar on our return and enjoyed several drinks around a fire before turning in rather the worst for wear.

We checked out on Monday, and visited the Royal yacht Britannia which is now moored nearby in Leigh (about 15min drive), before heading home.

The only meals in the hotel we had were the breakfast buffet, which was well stocked and fresh.

We would definitely use this hotel again. The staff were very pleasant and efficient, the rate was good, and the hotel is well placed. The SCC membership is excellent value, and in all the interconti hotels we have stayed, continues to get us first class treatment, great upgrades, and extra benefits (like fruit,& free movies).

My wife and I thought it was a wonderful Hotel when we stayed there last January. It's great to be so close to the city center. Just a little too cold that time of year to enjoy everything in Edinburgh.

Kweilin Restaurant - Cantonese / chinese. Well priced, great food, and a pretty decent wine list (we had our fav Robert Mondavi). Its a couple of blocks down hanover street, away from princess street.
