Went to a friend's wedding in Norfolk this past weekend. Not a lot of hotel options near the wedding so I chose the Hilton Norfolk Airport. I was able to get what I thought was a good rate for $99/night on the executive level. The ad said that we would have free breakfast, access to executive snack lounge, robes, etc.

Arrive on Friday afternoon to check in at 3pm (hotel has a 3pm check in policy). Room not ready. They tell me to come back in 15 minutes. No apology. I come back 15 minutes later, room still not ready. No apology. Go to a friends room (he was able to check in). Finally get a call 1.5 hours later that our room is ready. No apology. Go down to the desk to get the key and they try to give me a non-executive level room. I point out their error and they give me a room on the 5th floor (which I still don't think is an executive level room). No apology but at this point I just want to get to my room as I am already late for the rehearsal. Get up to the room and it smells like a cross between death, mildew and vomit. I called the front desk and ask to change rooms because of the smell. The agreed to the change and said they would send someone up with the new room keys. No apology. 30 minutes later, someone comes up with a ke for the new room on the 6th floor (marked executive level). My wife and I move our own bags to the 6th floor and go in to the new room. No horrible smell. The room is satisfactory but is missing some of the amenities they list as inclusive (robes, etc.) I call down to the front desk to ask where the executive lounge is. They laugh at me and say that the Norfolk Hilton doesn't have one. "What about my free breakfast," I ask? After much arguing, they agree to give me free breakfast coupons.

Anyway, the wedding was great and the rest of the stay at the Hilton was uneventful (except for the 2 day party in the room next to ours)!

Bottom line - if you go to Norfolk, don't stay at the Hilton unless you can't stay anywhere else.
