First Trip Report

Even though I have only been here a few days and have only posted around 30 times I thought I would give my first trip report.

Arrived at CO's terminal in Houston and walked over to the domestic check in. The lady at the entrence to the F class line asked where I was planning to travel too. I politely responded that I was going to Boston for a connecting flight on another airline to Europe. She immediately said " Well you better head over to the international terminal" I responded " But, I am not going on CO for my connection and will check in in Boston for my connection on Lufthansa. Then the lady asked me why I was connecting on Lufthansa in Boston and not taking the nonstop from Houston. At this point I was getting a litte curious as to why this person was asking this kind of question. However, after a successful business meeting at NASA HQ i was in a good mood and responded " If I take LH from IAH to FRA and then to Boston it is much more expensive than taking CO from BOS-IAH RT and then taking LH BOS-FRA roundtrip. She finally let me checkin. I got my exit row seat as I dont have the status to be upgraded on CO but went to the CO lounge with my NW card. The flight was delayed and I sat around hoping to make my connection. Anyone who has ever transfered from terminals A to E in Boston must know the stress that one feels before even leaving for Boston. Before boarding I headed to the gate and sat amoungst the many people in the area. The gate agent, whose microphone was broken then started to yell " Ladies and Gentlemen we apologize for the delay the inbound aircraft will be even later than we expected so we are bringing over a spare from the hangar" Great I thought. Then he continued to say that the plane they were swapping with ours was considerably smaller and that they would offer rewards for those willing to take a later flight. No thanx I thougt, Ill take my chances with the plane from the hangar. Boarding and such went according to normal procedure and the plane took off. 3.5 hour flight in a 737 is not that comfortable but im sure there are longer routes out there with such equipment. We were given drinks and a boxed meatloff sandwhich. Upon arrival in Boston I started my trek to Terminal E where I had my usual ritual of bypassing the long economy lines for the shorter C class line. I presented my upgraded Y ticket and they asked me for the coupon. I realized that my travel agent hadnt attached the coupon and the agent said I would have to sit in economy. After the flight from Houston I was in no mood to sit in the back and said look I have a assigned seat in C class and my ticket says C with a Y fare, can you please just let me have my seat. Ofcourse this is when flying a german airline has its drawbacks. The agent then fired about 10 regulations about UA upgrades on LH but then she finally relented that if I paid her the difference UA would reimburse me on presentation of my coupon at UA office. For this I thanked her and boarded the flight, avioding the small LH lounge at Boston. The flight was incredibly smooth and quiet. It was an A340, the second LH flight from Boston. The food was okay, a nice beef apetizer and Chicken for a main course (i dont remember the other selections). I love the way that they draw out the meal service on these flights. After I was done with dinner we were due to land in 3hr 15 minutes, thats shorter than the flight IAH-BOS. Transfered in Frankfurt to my flight to Geneva, back in Y class this time, sitting next to a swiss couple on their way back from Hawaii. Frankfurt airport is really not as bad as its reputation is, as I have found some areas to be above par for such a large airport. However, Geneva is a nicer airport. Two weeks later back on LH from Gva to FRA. Upon arrival we were parked at a bus gate, normally this is bad but it provided a great view of all the planes at Frankfurt. As I walked to my connecting flight to Hong Kong I noticed a flight that went to Auckland/Los Angeles. I spend a few minutes trying to figure out which one came first and decided it must be LAX. The flight to HKG on a 744 was full in C class and i was fortunate to get row 3 which is in the frist cabin (LH's F class is upstairs). The benefits of the first cabin are the larger overhead bins and no middle seat in the center. LH has additional 2-3-2 C class cabins on their 747s. The flight departed and flew over Prague, Warsaw, Mosocow, Samara, Almaty,Uromqei, the gobi desert and then down south over Chendu and turning east towards HKG. I have always been fascinagted by the difference in routes that airlines fly on specific flights. I have taken Europe to HK on LH,SR,AZ,CX,BA and KL and all have their own way. Checked in for my CX flight to TPE and went to their rather large lounge. It has 4 bars including the long bar, the short bar , the bar and the noddle bar. Interesting. One complaint is that it is inconvientaly located near gate 1 where the NYC flight (via YVR) leaves from. The TPE flights which continue on to small cities in Japan go from like gate 80 which was a pain when one is tired. The flight to TPE was comfortable, CX having a great fleet. It was my frist time on an A330 and I was impressed at the comfort. CX employs these planes as 2 classers. The one drawback was the bad food. The return flight from Taipei was in F class on a A340. really great. The seat, while not being a total suite reclined to 180 and they served a very nice afternoon tea (the British influence). Connecting to Lufthansa I had a chance to compare the 2 airlines. The service is more pleasant on CX but more attentive on LH, this is hard to compare because the LH flight is 11 hours and the CX 1 hour but those were the impressions that I got from my trip. The seats were more comfy on CX and the entertainment better however for some reason I just seemed to like LH more. Maybe its because the LH C class cabins have 3 sections on 747s as I explained above while CX C class is one big cabin, who knows. I like both airlines. The LH return flight was long because i couldnt sleep but oh well I slept on the connection to GVA, which was quiet turbulant for some reason, but it deosnt matter when your asleep. The little A319 was really bouncing around and I was sleeping like a baby. Fun.Well Im not gonna waste peoples time more than I already have with details of trips around Europe. Have a good one

Thanks for the report, CTANK. I think you gave the check-in person too much info at IAH: you probably shouldn't say too much unless you are pretty certain you aren't going to cause a data overflow.

Regarding A to E - did you take the bus or walk?
