The seventh ring of hell
I will put this bluntly: Azul Fives in Riviera Maya (Mexico) is the seventh ring of hell, a corporate scheme to defraud consumers that is utterly shameless in its venality.
THE FACTS
Having reserved and paid several thousand dollars 2 months in advance for one of the top-of-the-line suites in the hotel, I arrived and was told point blank and without a scintilla of remorse "we are full and have no rooms. We are sending you to another hotel."
Like hell!
I demanded the GM. What I got (eventually) was "Resort Manager" Alexis who strolled up some 30 minutes later (when it was apparent that I intended to stay and enforce my contract with the hotel rather than slink away) to tell me he was sorry, agree it was unacceptable and pretend to wring his hands, all the while sending one clear message: "You're screwed" The arrogance was staggering. Here is "Resort Manager" Alexis -- who holds the ultimate responsibility for this "resort" and clearly has the authority to make things right or to prevent them from going wildly wrong in the first place --unwilling to even offer an explanation for what was either gross mismanagement or, more likely, a routine shakedown. Either way, "Resort Manager" Alexis and his henchmen attempted to shoo me away as my elevated voice was doubtless exposing the fraud to others in the reception. Little did I know. . . (more on that below).
What makes this a fraudulent scheme as opposed to an isolated act of negligence? Easy: During the time in which I was waiting for Resort Manager Alexis to make an appearance, NO FEWER THAN THREE OTHER PEOPLE/FAMILIES WHO HAD BEEN COWERING AT THE FRONT DESK HEARD MY ANGER, APPROACHED ME NERVOUSLY AND WITH DECIDED DESPERATION CONFIRMED THAT THEY HAD ALSO BEEN DEFRAUDED AND WERE ALSO BEING TOLD TO SHIP OUT TO SOME OTHER HOTEL ABOUT WHICH THEY KNEW NOTHING!!
THE ADVICE
Readers, this pathetic excuse for a business is a straight-up scheme to defraud. Do NOT make plans to stay there, do NOT give them money, and DO NOT believe or trust a word they write or say.
THE SOLUTION
Me? I'm a lawyer, and this little enterprise is part of a company with offices and employees in the U.S., so federal jurisdiction won't be a problem. The lawsuit will have been filed before I land. Perhaps now "Resort Manager" Alex will learn firsthand what it means to be shipped out to another hotel.
And finally, the voucher for four free nights at the very hotel that told me to kiss its derriere which was offered a day after the offense was as ironic as it was insulting. Newsflash: I dont need freebies from anyone and certainly not from third rate establishments that realized far too late that THIS fraud victim had resources sufficient to expose its scheme.

This isn't a trip report and it has already been posted on another part of FT.
