Those "tumblers" you dismiss so rudely are actually a design icon called "Ultima Thule" by Finnish designer and sculptor Tapio Wirkkala. The design dates from the late 1960's I believe. I think they are just gorgeous. The last time I flew AY, they served Joseph Perrier Champagne Cuvee Royale. As champagnes go, it's hardly set-the-world-on-fire stuff, but equally, it is far from awful. It's a bright, refreshing champagne, rather than a fuller, yeasty blanc de blanc. Really, the quality of it is about what I would expect in a J cabin.
Finnair now serves Nicolas Feuillatte in short haul business class. I think it is a decent champagne. At least way better than Monopole you get on BA short haul.

Bravo! I really enjoyed the report.

From the comments here, and on the Premium Fare Forum, it looks like AY have stepped it up a bit since OP drafted the report. A few of my friends in the UK have taken them for recent trips to Asia and had very positive comments as well. I plan to contribute a trip report in July for CDG to HEL to ICN and back. I can only hope I run into as many 'characters' as OP did.

Haha. Where did this rear its head from?

It only seems fair to state that I've since flown AY again and got the lie flat product. It was very, very good.

Not a bitter lemon in sight.
