On the same trip I also went to Djibouti, Eritrea and Sudan. Eritrea was an absolute gem. What a pity that it's so hard to reach.
Very cool, did you blog about your trip anywhere? We really wanted to visit Eritrea but couldn't make it work with flight schedules. How/where did you get the visa, I've heard it is difficult/impossible these days.

Jealous as hell mate, those are places I'd love to visit but no one ever wants to go with me!

I feel like a "off the beaten path DO" in an exotic, rarely visited, locale for those on here with a particular level of adventurousness would be an interesting time.

Yeah my itinerary was pretty similar to yours. Stayed at Milles Collines in Rwanda and Hotel Club du Lac in Burundi.

I'm sure there a few more FTers out there, such as myself, who lack the experience/guts to try some of these places on their own. I love reading reports such as this to remind that no matter how bold I think I was in 2012 by going to Belarus, Namibia, Burma, etc. that there are others who rise far above that level of adventure.

A mate of mine worked on a mine near Lubumbashi for a while and when the plane flying to site had an...incident, they had quad bikes ready for the guys to make the trip out to site. Used to take about 4 hours apparently.

Sounded like fun to me!

Haha I was half joking but I definitely didn't expect to find a blog of someone who'd done it!
