Great TR! I'm slightly ashamed that I've lived in Japan for a couple years and had a couple visits, and I've only accomplished a little bit more than you did in a day. :o Great photos, too.

One qualm: I think that Aeroflot "A340" is an A330. I can't see a second pair of engines that would be an easy way to differentiate the 340 from the 330.

ETA: Also, what sort of engineering are you studying?

Haha, I noticed that after looking through it a couple days ago. Very dumb mistake...

I'm studying civil engineering currently but I'm looking at changing to Business Management.

Cool, good luck! (I'm a computer engineering student attempting a switch to CS/bio).

Funny... my first non-rev trip to Tokyo several years ago, I printed just two things... the exact same subway map, and a eerily similar Word document detailing how to get around Tokyo. Once you are there, all the important signage is in English, so that's not a problem... you just have to know what train to take, what stop to take, which direction to walk, etc. Great minds think alike!

Haha, thanks. I was relieved to see all the signs in English, that was one thing I was worried about.

How many people can say they went to Tokyo over the weekend!? Haha
That's what encourage me to fly =)

Must...Fly! Oct 10, 2012 10:56 am

Wonderful TR! As a student myself I often wonder of doing quick trips to various places.

However as I don't have the luxury of cheap tickets it is not really possible or feasible to do. I have done short trips within Australia (<24 hours) but I have seen it all there and I had a purpose to go. My shortest international trip was to Wellington, NZ. I think that was a little over 48 hours, I went with 3 or 4 days notice for a soccer match. It was fun! Hopefully I can do more travelling and maybe do this in the future :)

Well done once again!

Awesome report! Loved the aerial view of the city with Mt. Fuji in the background. Brings back good memories of my trip to Tokyo a few months ago.

Thanks for taking us along!

Hi ChiefNWA,

Nice report. I am flying DL173 to NRT as well for Christmas. Did you prefer to stay on the upper deck instead of lower deck? Isn't the upper deck a bit smaller due to the curvature of the plane? Did you feel that the upper deck was a bit more "secluded" etc?

Thanks so much. BTW, I have seat 73A.

Haneda check-in looks like DTW.

Nice trip report. I made a similar 1 day trip in August, no pics of Tokyo here, but i saw a lot of similar things. Lots of fun

I've flown upstairs twice and downstairs twice on the 747. Downstairs you get the widebody feeling. The seats (cubicles essentially) you get basically feel the same whether you're upstairs or down. You'll have the same amount of room. I personally like the upstairs more. I feel you're more personally attended to by the attendants and it's quieter than downstairs (there's only like 15 people up there with you...). I didn't feel confined at all. The seat was more than big enough for me and I'm 6'1. One complaint about upstairs though is it's a bit harder to see out the windows due to the curvature of the aircraft.
