Sibu, Sarawak
Just came back from 10 days in Malaysia, visiting friends and family. My mother's family is in the Sibu area. Tiny, tiny little town by the Rajang River. The best thing about Sarawak is the food. Everyone heads to Kuching, the capital for the beaches but if you are a foodie like me, there's nothing like eating your way through the coffee shops specializing in different dishes and the night markets for an endless variety of local specialties.
Here's a quick list of my favorite dishes
Char kwey tieu-noodle dish originating from Sibu cooked in sauce with meats/shrimp etc. Not spicy at all and delicious.
Laksa:spicy soup with thin vermicelli noodles cooked in rich coconut milk.
Kompia:local bun baked fresh every morning, most of them are prepared with sesame seeds and have a unique smell in the morning, fresh from the steamer.
Sweet corn ice cream bun from the mall next to the HR hotel in downtown Sibu.
Best of all, the roti canai tulis dripping with sweet, hot condense milk oozing down the sides of the roti canai.
There's nothing else to do in Sibu but eat. There is a "cultural" center known as the Civic Center but after a quick tour of the history of Sibu, there's nothing else to see.
My favorite drinks are the ice tea drinks known as the teh peng and the limon peng with freshly squeezed lemons in ice!
