Sounds like you had a great opportunity and took advantage to its fullest!

I'm curious ...you say you left not knowing Italian (if I read right) and returned being able to converse pretty well. Was that just from being immersed in it on a daily basis, or did you take some classes?

A bit of both. I had a private tutor through the Vatican, 2 hours a day, monday-thursday, which helped a ton. She was a Roman native who is the tutor for all of us that go over there. Also being immersed in the daily culture really helped as well, it made me practice what I had just learned.
