Question Purchase of extra seat

Hi gang
Newbie here my bad if this is in the wrong place

Looking for some input on the extra seat topic

I am a BIG guy and am looking forward to a couple of long haul flights next year too and from YVR to HKG and or NRT. No airline chossen yet.
Will probably by an extra seat (economy).

Question:
Has anybody had any good / bad experiences with this practice ?

I have only been forced to buy an extra seat once by an airline (who have since ceased operations) I want to be 50% proactive and 50% comfort for the long flights unless I win the lottery soon.

Any feeback is great.

Although I realize this is general question (and posted in the correct forum) you might want to see what airline schedule/fare looks best and then try re-posting in that forum, or perhaps search UA, AA or other majors. I have seen this discussed before - most airlines will accommodate but you have to telephone so that they get the name and checkin right.

In our case we are using an award seat for the middle seat, hopefully no problems. Given the difficulty making advance reservations for international premium class award seats at saver levels I think this is a strategy that we'll see employed more often in the future.
