1st Class Newark to Phoenix
I'm new to this site so not used to the abbreviations. I am flying with my family to Phoenix in April. Originally in coach, Row 20, time changed by 15 minutes. I was originally thinking about flying 1st as flight is long and my husband is 6'4" and always uncomfortable. I called to see how much to upgrade. I originally paid $245 for one way. Agent said originally that to upgrade was over $2,000 per person, I told her that can't be as it is $689 on line. She then told me that they would wave the $150 fee due to schedule change and can be put in 1st class for an extra $490 per person including taxes. Do you think this is good? I will also be traveling with 12 and 14 year old. Very well behaved and travel a lot, so being in 1st would not be a problem. Definitely better behaved then a lot of adults. Anyway, what do you think? Thanks. Sorry this is long.

Which airline? US Air or Continental? I'd consider it on Continental but not on US Air.
At the end of the day you have to decide if spending that extra cash for a 4 hour flight is worth it to you. That is a lot to spend, especially when you multiply it by 4 to get the whole family up front. On the flip side, the seats are bigger and CO actually has pretty decent service on the route.

Its all about if its worth it to you. I would NEVER pay $275+$490=$765 for one way in FC on EWR-PHX flight out of my own pocket. RT, maybe, OW, never (unless its an absolute emergency and I have no other choice).
That said, another question is if you are flying US or CO. If its US, don't even think about doing that, absolutely horrible airline and dispeakable "service" in both cabins (how do you like drinking your $4 a bottle wine from Big Lots in a plastic cup in "First Class"? This is not a joke). On CO FC is very decent, but not for $765 one way for myself.

....And in any case, leave your offspring in the back of the bus. They will likely survive and even flourish. As for Dad, for the $1,500+ for the two of you, think of alternative uses for the cash, no longer enough to buy a good car, but certainly facilitating a good time or two.
I'll exchange 4-5 hours of inadequate legroom for a better hotel or a suite on the concierge floor (if the lounge is open on weekends and breakfast vouchers are provided, see Marriott forum) any day.
As noted FC on Useless Air is roughly comparable to those French railway freight cars which were labelled "40 Hommes/8 Chevaux", except the airline provides neither adequate hay or any oats.
