Changing One Booking Segment

Hello, I've recently booked a Business Class ticket on American for a trip to Latin America. Since then, I've sold my home and now would like to change the final leg of the trip from DFW to another city since I have no reason to go back to the origination city. I've called American and they tell me that the new fare is $2800 more plus a $350 change fee.......even though I'm not changing any of the international legs that are business class, only the final domestic leg (and the new flight would be on a CRJ so economy). I've thought about just booking a new one way ticket from DFW to my new final destination but American tells me that their booking engine would catch that and cancel all flights. Does anyone have any suggestions? Paying $2800 to fly from DFW to ORD rather than DFW to SFO doesn't make a lot of sense to me. Thanks.

If your ticket is totally unused, the entire ticket is re-priced as though you are just buying it now, hence the fare differnce. Can you buy the final segment on an airline other than American?
