In the UK people go to hospital, just as people in the US go to college. However, AFAIK, one does not say "Hospital first opened in [some year]." One says "The first hospital opened..." or "The first example of a hospital...", etc.

I'm making light of the uncountable nature of the noun.
In the UK people go to hospital, just as people in the US go to college. However, AFAIK, one does not say "Hospital first opened in [some year]." One says "The first hospital opened..." or "The first example of a hospital...", etc.
