Reading, mp3 player, play my Nintendo DS (best purchase ever), watch movies, work on my novel, play computer games, sleep, have a snack, think about important (or not important) things, read American Way, chat with seatmate on occasion.

my laptop and mp3/mp4 player are always loaded up with the latest tv shows and movies. I never rely on in flight entertainment. All their stuff is old to me anyway

I either sleep or do busy work on my laptop like organizing file folders, answering emails, plan the next MR, etc.

Short flights - listen to my iPod.

Longer flights - load up some movies on my iPhone and watch them.

It used to be listen to my iPod, but my pack rat of a two year old has hidden it somewhere that I can't find - it's been about six months since I last saw it. I refuse to replace it since I know I'll eventually find it

Now, it's just read the magazine in both directions and scour the skymall catalog. I'll critique the ads, articles, and AV selections.

And if my daughter is on the flight, I'll spend about half the time entertaining her.

Typically I read and watch movies. I would enjoy chit chatting with my neighbor but I rarely do because I do not want to be a bother to them.

I do have one thing that amuses me. The first flight I take in a month (NWA guy) I work on the crossword in the airline's travel mag. I usually have to do some cheating to get through it in it's entirety. Then on a subsequent flight, shortly after wheels up, I will get the magazine out and start working on the crossword puzzle. Of course I already know all the answers but sometimes the look on my neighbor's face is funny. You get that "My goodness, this guy is either a freaking walking encyclopedia or a total freak" look.

1. Read, usually non-fiction (history), which (a) may impress the neighbors, and (b) causes early eyelid droop.

2. Close eyes, check for eyelid light leaks, and practice breathing very quietly and sitting very still as if practicing to be a jungle sniper.

Sleep, of which if you'll regularly rise before 7, you can't get too much of, will come.

Read a novel or play Sudoku while on the ground, pull out 10" screen DVD player when in the air.

Plan ahead.
I see your SFO-LAX and raise you the 19min CLE-DTW

If I'm not sleeping, I'm either watching/listening/reading(Stanza is a great app btw) something on my iPhone, reading a real book or watching the IFE.

Trans-pacific flights of 14 hours or so...

Sleep - usually can sleep no more than 3 or 4 hours;
- if IFE available, play chess, blackjack, sudoku, 5 in a row go;
- read any Frederick Forsyth work, magazines like Sports Illustrated, Time, Newsweek, Money, Economist, travel mags, skymart, newspaper;
- do crossword and other word games from newspaper or flight magazine;
- watch the satellite image of plane moving over ocean; count time on the flight data of hours since origin, hours to destination;
- guess time until next meal;
- go to toilet, brush teeth, wash face, get hot tea to drink, walk around, do simple stretching exercises;
- mentally replay recent tennis matches
- and voila, plane begins descent...

rarely watch IFE or overhead movies because I find earphones very uncomfortable to wear and to listen to, will talk to neighbor only if neighbor seems receptive to talking. Used to chat up Asian airlines FA's but now no longer because age difference between their and my age became overwhelmingly great.

Coming home usually seems a lot quicker than going from home to wherever.

I read books or magazines. Favorite books: math-oriented, for example those by William Dunham or Paul Nahin or Eli Maor. Magazines: ACBL Bulletin.
