Question on JFK-LHR

Hello all. I'm new the the forum here and I have a question I'm hoping someone can help me with.

My wife and I are going to London May 4-12, and we have decided that we would prefer to fly one of the UK legacy carriers (BA, Virgin) just for a bit of a different experience. Anyway, in looking at round-trip fares JFK-LHR, they seem to be hovering just below $1,700 for two tickets in economy class. We are pretty well locked into both JFK and the dates listed.

I'm wondering if I should go ahead and book now before they go up, or wait it out to see if they come down a bit. I haven't booked a trans-Atlantic flight in quite some time, so I don't know how those prices fluctuate as you get closer to the departure date. Also, I don't know if/how the economic slow-down might effect these fares. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Matt, welcome to FT!

If $$ is an issue, there are cheaper options (Iceland Air @513.00, etc.) , but as far as the Legacy Carriers go, I don't think they'd go lower than that.... (and there's always the chance of the oil prices going up...), so I'd buy it now....

If you want something a little different for a little less money, you can do Aer Lingus via Dublin into London Gatwick on those dates in May for $686 each, or Air India Newark-LHR for $706 each. That's about $300 less than the market leaders are charging right now. I don't think fares will sink appreciably between now and then.
