Getting bumped on a fully refundable ticket

Let's say that I want to meet a friend at the gate so I buy a fully refundable ticket. What if the flight that my refundable ticket is for is overbooked, and they take volunteers for bumping? Could I get bumped, and then get a free flight plus a refund on the refundable ticket?

They won't bump you.

Depends on airline, but my experience is that if you are on the list, you are on the list.

If yours is a high dollar (fully refundable ticket) they won't bump you. I dream too. It's ok.

Some airport/airline/TSA (not sure which) employees somewhere in the US were arrested a while back for playing this game.

At the point that "your" flight is overbooked--can you really get a refund if you've already checked in and have a bp in hand?

You certainly can, and the airline would be happy to do so!

Which airline(s) are you speaking of that have such a policy?? CO certainly will allow such a VDB situation - I've done it. I even told them that if the re-route they could get wasn't sufficient I'd take the bump then cancel and buy another ticket on a reasonable routing. I still got my voucher.

Oh yes! Happened to me on Air Canada MSP-YYZ last winter. Too many on plane and they IDBed 8. Nobody would volunteer to get off, so they IDBed the last 8 pax in line, who were already waiting in line with part of the plane already boarded...

So, Air Canada has no priority for who gets bumped involuntarily? Figures.

Happened in Philadelphia.
IIRC, the culprits were security personnel (not TSA).

Buying a ticket with no intent of actually flying is fraud.....IMHO.
