I'm at just under 40, and I am shocked that so many FTers have a count of 15 or so:

Aegean Airlines
Aeroflot Russian Airlines
Alitalia (and Alitalia Express)
Air Greece (subsequently merged into A3)
Air Europa
Air France (and Britair)
Aserca Airlines
Austrian Airlines
Axon Airlines (now defunct)
Britannia Airlines
British Airways
British Midland Airways (not flown them after they became bmi)
Cathay Pacific Airways
Cretan Airlines (Charter) (now defunct)
Cronus Airlines (subsequently merged into A3)
CSA Czech Airlines
Easyjet
Etihad Airways
Iberia
Kenya Airways
KLM
Lot Polish Airlines
Lufthansa (and Air Dolomiti)
Malev
Mihin Lanka (now defunct)
Olympic Airways/Airlines/Aviation
Santa Barbara Airlines
Singapore Airlines
South East European Airlines (now defunct)
Spanair
Srilankan Airlines
Sterling (now defunct)
Swiss/Crossair
Thai Airways
Transavia (on a KLM code)

I am sure I'm forgetting a couple...Soon to try out CZ and KE (and DY) for the first time!

Dodgiest one...most of them have been (sometimes surprisingly) quite decent. It's probably going to have to be Olympic (I obviously did have some problems with AZ, but their employees have invariably been very willing to help me solve them and comp hotels, meals, FIMs whenever my flights have been disrupted).

I have to admit, this was kind of a fun exercise. I stopped when I hit the 40 or so below. I also took this one step further and sorted by best experience or memory to worst experience/memory, top to bottom. By far my pick for bottom of the barrel, hands down worst airline I've flown is Ryanair.

Like another poster, I also miss TWA. That was my preferred carrier in the '80s, even though I seem to recall their service being a little spotty.

JAL
Air New Zealand
Cathay Pacific
Qantas
Emirates
British Airways (glory days version only)
TWA
Eastern
Braniff
Turkish
TAP
Lufthansa
AirMalta
SAS
Icelandair
FinnAir
Air Seychelles
KLM
Gulf
United
Alaska
American
Southwest
Northwest
Delta
Air Canada
Continental
Horizon
America West
AirOne
Olympic
Spanair
Go
Easy Jet
Swiss Intl
Meridiana
Iberia
Midway - in the '80s they were always, always late out of MDW
SATA
Alitalia
USAir
Ryanair - nuff said

I could only manage 37, some of which are now defunct or merged.

My 2 favourites by far are ANZ and was TWA.

The loss of TWA was felt greatly by me as the customer service I had was second to none.

I also liked Pan Am but that was for the service from the cabin crew on Xmas eve flights in the early '70s

Worst has to be Ryanair followed by BOAC (48hrs from JNB - LHR)

Air NZ, ANZ
TWA, TWA

Not in any particular order!
Continental, COA
Alaska, ASA
BlueBird Aviation, BBZ
JAL, JAL
KLM, KLM

What are the three letter abbreviations supposed to mean?

I am not sure about some of them. In my understanding, the official abbreviation of Lufthansa is DLH (Deutsche Lufthansa)

Alright, so the plane could've been a maximum of 33 years old when I flew it. But then.... who wants to fly on a 30 year old DC-10 across the pacific?

Funny, but I'd rather fly TATL on a 30 year old DC-10 or L1011 than a 752 like some carriers do. Can we at least make it an MD11?

I have changed that, and thanks for pointing it out to me. Which ones are you not sure about?. I put the codes in because like some others who come here not all codes are recognised and it saves wandering off into the ether to find them.

This is where most of them were gleaned from, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_airlines, the rest from Google search.

I am fallable like every one else, if any other errors are there please let me know.

Not sure about Tower Air. But I was on a chartered World Airlines flight for the military from IAD to FRA back in 97 when my father got stationed in Germany. Absolutely the worst flying experience in my life.

We are two hours in the flight and have to turn around and go back to IAD due some engine problems. We then proceed to sit on some remote tarmac at IAD in a fully packed DC 10 for 3+ hours with no AC in the middle of July.

They finally let us off the plane around 6PM and proceed to give the entire flight meal vouchers to the same restaurant (TGI Fridays I think). Needless to say the wait quickly grew to several hours at the restaurant. (We opted for Pizza Hut instead and paid out of pocket)

About 5 hours later (around 11:30) They finally announce we aren't going anywhere until the next day (duh!) and say they are going to put us up, but first we have to go out on the tarmac and take any luggage we need for that night.

So at about 2:30AM we can finally leave the airport, thinking we would be at the hotel pretty quickly, but where do we end up? A best western out in Springfield. (About a hour from the airport) We finally get to the hotel and check in around 3:30AM only to have to be up at 7AM to catch a bus back to the airport.

So that officially puts world airlines in a tie at the top of my list of dodgiest airline flown with ValuJet.

I don't think I input names of subsidiaries into flight memory to avoid this problem. Same with minor aircraft variations.

Graraps, I'M shocked that so well-traveled an FTer can have racked up 40 carriers, and not a one of them US-origin. You don't know what you're missing.
