PJ Etiquette

What is the etiquette regarding when to put on the free PJs? Do I do this prior to 1st meal, after 1st meal, just before snoozing? Does everyone put on the PJs or just the "bold" passengers?
What to do with wallet when wearing PJs and sleeping?

Georgia Peach Jul 14, 2008 4:03 pm

I usually change when I'm ready to sleep, and put my valuables in a small fanny pack.

techgirl Jul 14, 2008 4:07 pm

I'm usually into mine as soon as the seatbelt sign is off after takeoff - and I'm in them until the last meal service.

I like arriving fresh (particularly if I'm landing somewhere with no arrivals lounge) and I view them as a way to avoid getting my travel clothes rumpled or accidentally spilling something on them in turbulence!

Savage25 Jul 14, 2008 4:09 pm

I change after takeoff as soon as the seatbelt sign goes off. Wallet goes into the little cubbyholes that most F/C seats have nowadays.

FlyingOnceMore Jul 14, 2008 4:16 pm

I thought PJ etiquette was to keep them wrapped...........then sell them on eBay ! :p

christep Jul 14, 2008 6:51 pm

It's entirely up to you. Some people get changed as soon as they are given the PJs (i.e. before takeoff), and personally if I'm going to wear them at all then I either do that or pretty soon after the seat belt sign goes off. Plenty of places around for the wallet - but most often just in my carry on bag in the overhead.

I agree. Heck, I've even changed into them while on the ground. That way, if we're held captive with the seatbelt light on for an extended period, I can drift off to sleep for awhile.

MegatopLover Jul 15, 2008 6:13 am

I never change into PJ's before takeoff. I keep my ordinary street clothes and, crucially, street shoes on for safety reasons. I usually keep my street clothes (but not street shoes; sockettes instead) on for the meal service, because eating a nice meal in pajamas doesn't feel right to me. I only wear the PJ's during times when I'm trying to put myself in a sleeping mindset, so they typically go on after the meal service.

When flying on airlines other than SQ or when flying SQ C, my wallet and passport go in my carryon tote. When in SQ F on a Megatop, my wallet and passport go in the little compartment in the seat for just such purposes.

This is a good point - even if I am in my PJs before takeoff, I always have my street shoes on and fastened until we're well airborne.

I'm going to move this to Travel Buzz as this is not an Asia specific question.

On our 15 hour flight from LHR-EZE I changed in to them after the seat belt sign went off and they stayed on till the GRU stopover.Thankfully we were allowed to stay on the plane where I changed back into my clothes for the shortish hop to EZE.
Plan on using them again for our flight over to the UK in a couple of weeks which isn't in F this time but in Club World.

lucky9876coins Jul 15, 2008 11:54 am

I usually change into them before takeoff and out of them right before the seatbelt sign goes on for landing. They're comfortable and make sure my other clothes stays fresh, so I keep 'em on as long as I can.

I don't wear them on the flights either. I usually give them away when I get home. I have a few nice ones I have kept. The British Airways PJs fit me well.

DITTO!

Or else, put the PJs on when you get to your hotel or home... :)

Ted S Jul 15, 2008 1:22 pm

Like a few of the recent posters, I don't tend to worry about airline provided PJs as I'm likely to be dressed comfortably on a long-haul flight already (gym style warmups and a t-shirt). When I get off the plane I'll change back into whatever clothes I need for that day depending on which flight it is (going or returning).

I've got a few, still wrapped, in the closet. I see no sense wearing them on westbound flights to the US.

Fraser Jul 15, 2008 1:48 pm

I change as soon as I can, then out of them maybe 45mins before landing, but after the last meal service. I was reminded why I do this routine on a recent JL flight. I changed out of the PJs soon before landing but was then offered breakfast, result was I had tomato sauce from my omelette on my shirt until we got to the hotel and I changed.

I've had wine glasses and water spill on me enough times (usually by turbulence) to warrant wearing them on any longhaul flight.

thelark Jul 15, 2008 3:45 pm

Usually by the 5th drink or so I'll put on a little show and change into my PJs.

;)

That's a bit extreme! And what would you ever say if you forgot to take them out and got stopped at customs?

zoonil Jul 16, 2008 9:13 am

does anyone change to PJ's (bought from home ofcourse), while travelling in coach?

Samso-Knight Jul 16, 2008 9:16 am

I've been known to change into a cashmere sweater and jogging bottoms when forced to sit at the back... You have to change back into your day clothes early though before landing or incur the wrath of the queue waiting to use their free toothbrush.

SQ even sell their first PJs throughout all cabins which is odd... and odder that they used to have a reflective strip on them!

Paint Horse Jul 16, 2008 9:34 am

Now what I want to know is just how substantial are these PJs? Are these real pajamas like my dear mother used to buy me? Or do I need to stay somewhat dressed underneath so to speak, as I may be walking around the cabin from time to time. :D

Agreed. Why does your desire and decision when to don the PJs have to do with anyone else?

If you're a guy then definitely keep well fitting underwear on underneath.... the material is not that thick and the other pax don't want to see you swinging past up the aisle, ;)

Um ... in case you didn't know ... fanny pack : US :: bum bag : UK. ;)

The PJs in the Krisshop (which I haven't seen in a while) aren't the F PJs, and they double up as a jogging outfit, which is why you have the reflective strip.

Suites

What is the pajamas etiquette in suites - Emirates A340-500, Jet B777-300ER, Singapore A380-800?

Do you change into pajamas in lavatory or in your suite?

Do you wear the pajamas in your suite, or take them off while in suite?

Wiirachay Jul 16, 2008 1:49 pm

Just change in and out of PJ's in bathroom. :) If you're traveling in SQ F in the A380, keep PJ's on. Note to those occupying the middle seats with someone else. :D

>>> ... not very thick ... see you swinging ...
You mean the PJ's are made of glorified napkin material that tears when wet instead of woven cloth?

>>> ... from home) ... travelling in coach ...
I won't wear PJ's in public, except perhaps as coveralls as the person with the tomato omelet explained.. In fact often I even pull on sweatpants or swim trunks or even jeans instead in the privacy of my bedroom too. Easier to go down to the 'fridge for a midnight snack or to take out the garbage if I forgot.

>>> ... occupying the middle seats with ...
I "orta" ask you to elaborate but maybe not since it's bad enough being in the middle seat I "shunt hafta" "do" more to comply.

Absolutely; I'm old enough to not worry about what anyone else might think; however I do use retained airline PJ's where they are more like a light tracksuit ...

Likewise. And yes, if one is going to change in/out of their pj's on the plane, please do so in the lav.

skylady Jul 18, 2008 5:51 am

Why not just wear something comfortable enough to sleep in to board? Will save you much time and energy. A nice velour tracksuit maybe?;)

But itīs not always possible. Because I am leaving the company, driving to the airport and jump on the plane. I change before I will go to sleep.

meducate Jul 19, 2008 7:23 am

Like several other posters, I like to change into the pjs while still on the ground, prior to take-off. I usually only use the pj bottoms and wear a t-shirt brought from home. I find the long sleeved pj tops to be too warm for flying! I usually change back just after breakfast/just before landing.

kluau88 Jul 21, 2008 5:06 am

Usually I change into PJ's after I have boarded and prior to takeoff. As others have said it's nice to arrive at your destination in a fresh set of clothes that you haven't sat in for 14+ hours. I change back after the meal service prior to arrival.

Jazzop Jul 21, 2008 11:12 pm

Does anyone care to explain what airlines/routes/classes provide PJs? Until this thread I have never heard of such a thing.

why ? what makes it a "good point" ?

I usually change into PJs (in the lav) before TO, and get dressed about an hour before landing.

BA TATL F is the only place I've been offered the PJs. I've heard rumors of sleep suits on VS TATL UC, but never been offered them.

Don't expect them from any of the US Flagged carriers, but if you're overseas you'll see them. Personally I've received them on SQ F, NH F, and LH F. I've been gifted PJ's from BA F and CX F.
They are available on most longhaul routes. On SQ you'll get them on daytime flights exceeding 7 hours and evening flights exceeding 4 hours.

SQ F is designed by Givenchy and CX F is designed by Shanghai Tang.

Here's a sampling of the SQ amenities in F over the years.

skylady Jul 23, 2008 5:08 am

A few years ago, AA was on track with the PJs, but decided to scrap the plan, in lieu of mnagement bonuses. I hope you are all comfy in your own sleepwear.
