Disposing of sharps on the road??
I thought I remembered seeing a Travel Health forum, but when I looked for it, I couldn't find it, so either its gone or I'm crazy.
My brother has begun weekly infusions of medicine. Next week, we'll be out of town, and he doesn't want to carry his sharps container with him. Does anyone have any ideas of what to do with his sharps and other bio-trash? The best idea I came up with was to take them to a doctor's office or hospital, and ask them to take them (it's not a lot, maybe a ziploc baggie full). I was just wondering if anyone had any other ideas, or has had success with this.
thanks
sammy

CVS and I'm sure others make single use disposable units for $2.80 for four of them. I'm fairly certain if you search you can find them in bulk, one of the people I know who uses them mentioned she buys them in bulk when she travels for her daily injections

If by any chance he's in New York State on his travels, their full listing of collection sites is here

I don't know if other states maintain such a listing or not.
By law in NY, all hospitals and nursing homes have to accept sharps from the public.

If you don't care about recycling the waste or being eco-friendly, you can usually just dispose of the waste in the regular trash. In most states, the instructions are the following,
For some states, there are additional disposal requirements.
Also, you could use the Sharps By Mail service where you can mail in your container into a disposal center.
I would assume that all hospitals or doctors offices will take your needles. If not, you can find places that definitely will through The Coalition for Safe Community Needle Disposal.

Place sharps in a rigid, strong plastic or metal container with a screw-on or tightly secured cap, such as a laundry detergent bottle. Or, use a purchased Sharps Container. Reinforce the cap with heavy duty tape. Mark clearly and noticeably on the outside of the container Do Not Recycle and Household Sharps. Dispose of container with regular trash.

Thanks for all the replies! I guess we'll go with the thing from CVS, that seems easiest...
