AAA Currency Exchange

Has anyone tried this service from AAA?

Apparently, they use Wells Fargo to provide foreign currency exchange in the US prior to overseas travel. By obtaining currency this way, one can choose denominations, etc.

I sometimes need to pay cash in advance for apartment rentals in foreign cities shortly after arrival and it would be handy to have large bills with me rather than use ATM for withdrawing cash. In theory, purchase from a major bank would have minimal fees, favorable rate, etc.

Any thoughts/experiences?

American Express offers a better rate than AAA on about any given day. Before all the countries went to the euro, I called all companies that exchanged money on the same day, for the same amount and AE was the best. Plus, I have AE close by. You could also go to XE.com (I blieve they are out of NY) and they will ship to your home.

You might also check Bank of America for the same foreign currency service. Their rates are relatively competitive with other banks and they waive service fees for BofA customers. I've used that service via the internet. You have the currency either delivered directly to you or, as I do, deivered to you bank branch. Takes about 2 days.

I recently checked BOA for Thai bahts and there rate was terrible vs the market exchange and Amex.

i have found Amex to be the best and quite convenient.

Thanks for all the information. Does Amex provide this service only to cardholders?
