CBP Didn't Stamp My Passport

US citizen.

Came into IAH the other day, going through passport control. The agents asked me where I was and why but didn't even stamp my passport (he did stamp the declaration though). Why?

Most countries do not stamp the passports of their own country's citizens, except upon request.

In my experience, it depends a lot on the airport. IAD (Dulles) stamps more than 50% of the time; I can count 10 IAD arrival stamps in my 2-year old passport. At ORD, my passport has been stamped once in at least four arrivals over the past two years. I don't think my passport has ever been stamped at LAX or SFO.

They used to stamp my passport all the time at SFO, but it's been a long time since they've done so. Maybe they do it less when the passport is getting full?

I've never been stamped unless I asked to be stamped.

I'm stamped more consistently (close to 100% of the time when arriving via air) entering the US with a US passport than I am entering a foreign country with a US passport.

Stamps in Passport

Stamps in Passport:

If an agent asks 'why' do you want a stamp??
..what would be a good response?

I'am from CAD and like to have my passport
chopped just in case someone asks 'where
have you been'? Sometimes they ask this
at the YYZ airport.

"I need to show presence in each country for determining tax residency".

Always works.

I've done this. For myself most of the time I don't get stamped. Recently I have been getting more stamps, possibly because I have a new blank passport.

I think they stamp the customs form so that you can't swap the one you show the immigration officer and show a different one to the customs officer. This is related to the "how long out of the country" question which only serves to determine the duty free allowance.
