One reason (of many) that I prefer a window seat is to make sure that other people in the cabin can't keep that specific window shade open.

NRT/LAX and NRT/SFO come to mind... it's essentially a daytime redeye, and there's always one clown in the cabin who insists on keeping the window shade open. By securing a window seat, I know there's at least 1 less set of open window shades.

The guy was out-of-line, but you can't assume that he actually picked his aisle seat.

What a jerk.
Didn't you know that UA's seats absorb methane really well? Nobody would have smelt it anyway.

according to mr kk, the answer to this is 'so the sun isn't shining in my eyes and i can sleep.'

not arguing with you, as i actually prefer the shade open...but i figure it's at the discretion of the person who's in that seat.

no such discretion exists if you're the guy on the aisle. get up when your neighbor needs to use the loo, be polite to your fellow humans. really, how hard is that?!

How very rude. I would have promptly walked right on his lap (and gee, sorry if my spike heels catches his "grolleys")

I find those little eye mask thingies work pretty well for sleeping. Had any luck with them?

I believe the suggestion was to use this talent while climbing over the guy.

What I'd do - is stand up quickly at your seat and say (in an urgent tone of voice) excuse me, excuse me, I think I'm going to be sick !!

Which could be considered just as rude as the aisle passenger's behaviour.

While I still agree, isn't this a double-standard? Which begs the question - when is a double-standard proper?
