Short Beach Break in U.S.

We are going to be in NYC at the U.S. Open over Labor Day and then the following weekend I am meeting my folks in Dallas. But I have a few days lag time between the two trips and I wanted to stop off at a beach somewhere for a couple of days in between. Any suggestions?

I was thinking South Beach or Ft. Lauderdale, but wondered if there was something else possibly that I hadn't thought of or had not been to. Plus, I'll be on my own for those couple of days and South Beach seems sort of like a party place for you and your crew, and I won't have a crew, even though my crew isn't really a party crew truth be told (and thank god for that!). I can go anywhere in the U.S. really, and also considered maybe Jersey or Delaware or somewhere up there, but don't know if it is still warm there in early Sept., though I would assume it is. Give me a couple of ideas since we usually go to Europe for all of our vacations and I'm not up on my beaches. Sure sounds relaxing though, especially for just a few days, otherwise it would be a bit too relaxing.

The Jersey Shore comes to mind...

And there's always Florida. Or the Hamptons... truth is, there are so many options! Care to narrow down on any preference in particular?

Bermuda? Not really the US, but we'll annex it eventually.

I love the California coast between Ventura and Morro Bay, and this would be very nice in September. The Outer Banks of N.C. could do the trick, but you do run the risk of the occasional storm/hurricane.

I'm a fan of the panhandle of Florida: the beaches between Destin and Panama City Beach are a favorite of mine, Seagrove, Seaside, Blue Mt. Beach, are all very nice. The only danger of Aug/Sept in Florida is hurricane season, and it can be quite a crap shoot.

It also depends on whether you want a highrise condo/hotel (which Destin/Navarre/Panama City have an abundance of), a beach house rental, or a smaller beachfront "cabin". I find all to be rather reasonable on the panhandle. The fishing is outstanding, the water beautiful, and it is generally pretty relaxed and un-Girls Gone Wild if you stay away from Panama City Beach itself and Destin during peak college spring break time.

Perfect if you're not into actually swimming. The fishing is good, and the casinos/casino hotels are great, but the water is better the further east you go.

The Beau Rivage hotel is especially nice, the suites having a beautiful view. I haven't stayed in the new Island View Casino/Hotel, but the casino itself is nice.

If you want a great beach and no people around try Fort Desoto beach south of St Petersburg (you can fly into TPA and its about an hour drive). Both AA and DL fly direct from NYC. Off there next weekend. Great place to take your music and a good book and forget about life for a bit.

If you really can go anywhere in the U.S., go to Hawaii. Great weather, unique local culture, friendly locals, and unmatched geological wonder.

That could be right at the busy time of Hurricane season, I'd be careful about picking places in Fla or the Gulf of Mexico.

Of course, there's no guarantee there will or won't be storms.....
