Change in EU

I am flying from BOS-AMS-FCO. What do you do when changing from intl. to intra EU? Is it like international to domestic USA going the other way?

It's not intra-E.U. in your case but intra-Schengen as not all E.U. member countries are treaty to Schengen and not all Schengen countries are members of the E.U.

In your case, you clear immigration at AMS but do not collect your bags (and clear them through customs) until you reach FCO.

Thanks! Interesting, non-EU but Schengen. What are some examples? Norway?

Yes, and in 2008 Switzerland will join Schengen as well without any intention of ever joining the EU
