The gov't is easing it's requirements for travel into Canada and Mexico, for a little while
The proposal would temporarily lift a requirement that U.S. passports be used for citizens flying to and from Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean and Bermuda.

It is not about travel into Canada/Mexico. It is about travel from Canada/Mexico.
Canada and Mexico could require US citizens to have a passport to visit their contries and the US would not be able to do anything about it. BTW, the US will require citizens from Canada/Mexico to show a valid passport before entering the US.

Yes... that's what I thought in a different way..... as a UK passport holder that is usually in Asia or Europe, a thread entitled "passport restrictions eased" seems particularly US centric when it turns out it is concerned only with US passport holders travelling in North America.
