smoking in the bathroom is simply wrong and the person should be prosecuted (and i'm a smoker, folks). it's wrong, against the law and dangerous.

It is amazing to me how many smokers treat the entire world as their own personal ashtray. It is considered acceptable for smokers to drop their cigarettes anywhere, and extinguishing them is optional. It is this attitude that caused that fire.

Why can't smokers take the time to properly extinguish and dispose of their cigarettes?

you're talking about littering, right? everyone litters (i'm guilty as well) so it's not just about cigarette butts........

If they're AF crew, they just light up as soon as they're through customs. My FA on a Biz flight did this at CDG a couple of years ago.

I had a pilot tell me about pilots that would put something over the smoke alarm (plastic glove or condom or something stretchy), and then smoke right next to the drain of the sink, which has a suction line on some planes, I think.

Not very responsible.

I had this happen on a flight to Hawaii! When the alarm went off the FAs rushed to the LAV like no tomorrow.

You forgot alcoholics. I discriminate against them freely and openly.

There's a report in Hong Kong's local newspapers about a passenger lighting it up in the lavatories on a recent CX FRA-HKG flight, 2/8/08.

Fined HK$3,000 (about $400), plus a HK$1,500 fine related to her bail (not clear what that was about).

So, these things are still going on, and people do get caught and fined.

last time I smoked on a plane, I booked a smoking seat, after about 5 hours I begin to fancy a cigarette but I usually manage the full 8 hours sweet tempered

Littering is one thing, but combustible litter is another. It is is a hazard that some smokers do not respect.

Uh, no, I don't litter. Ever. In fact, I volunteer picking up trash in the Phoenix Mountain Preserve.

There should be jail time for smoking in an airplane lav. How utterly selfish.

Sadly, around here that is mostly true. I get quite upset by all the litter by the side of the road, but never see anyone actually throwing their crap out the window. Cowards.

Smoking in the aircraft loo should be punishable by public throwing of a bucket of cold water onto them as well as being carrying a minimum jail term of 12 months. If they endanger other people's lives, then they should be suitably punished.

There is nothing in the OP's post that says she did not obey instructions of obey signs other than those that told her what the laws and rules were.

She deserves some significant punishment, especially given the easy availability of other nicotine sources, but come on. By that logic why not put up "No Murdering" signs so that you can convict murderers of an additional charge of not following posted signs? How about "No Speeding" signs under the speed limit signs? How about having police shout out "Don't murder. Don't steal..." to people on the street. Then you can charge murderers and thieves with disobeying a lawful order.

I had never seen anyone try to get away with this stupid maneuver, so I am curious to know what happens in this situation. Anyone know?

That's a blatantly obvious tampering in addition to smoking. Hope she doesn't get away from any hefty fines.
