BOS-IAD. Unbelievable. I'll bet you cash money that she was drunk, too, because any sober smoker can go a few hours without completely flipping out. (I speak from experience as an ex-smoker.)

I'll also bet you she has quite a sexy voice and all her personal belongings smell like an ashtray. :D

We entered a holding pattern and someone went into the bathroom and started smoking. They threw their cigarette away in the trash and set the trash on fire. We made an emergency landing, evac'd, etc., just because some dumb*ss couldn't deal with their nic fits.

At least you got out of your holding pattern!

In Russia this is par for the course if on a Russian carrier. On the 4-7 hour flights I fly regularly fly it happens all the time. I've even had it happen on short SVO to LED or SVO to KBP legs. I often see FA's just roll their eyes, if that, when a passenger opens the lav door and the smell and sight of smoke hit us all.

Was on an Air France flight from CDG to SVO in 2002 though when a Russian was caught on board smoking in the lav. They turned him over to the police upon arrival (he got to deboard first) and not 30 minutes later I saw him outside the airport laughing with the police and...smoking.

Funny what irks us here in the US that is very much ho hum in other countries...

About 15 years ago, on a ORD-PHL flight, some geniuses decided to do a joint before/during/after joining the mile high club.

It appeared from my seat that she had tried block the air vent with paper towels, and that the towels had caught on fire, making the situation even worse. I had never seen anyone try to get away with this stupid maneuver, so I am curious to know what happens in this situation. Anyone know?

Maybe she should read about this:

It isn't so much that she was a smoker that causing people to mock her - it's that whole breaking the law and possibly endangering the lives of others that is the problem.

On a flight last year I kept smelling smoke on a male FA. How could he smoke without it wafting out of the lav or setting the detector off? He must have gone in there 5-6 times during the flight.

I had something similar happen on a CDG -> LHR flight a year or so back. Only it didn't happen in the air. It happened *on the ground* while we were waiting for a gate after arrival. A PAX got into such a nic fit he raced up to the front lav, locked the door and lit up. The smoke alarm immediately went off, the FAs were LIVID and they called the police to deal with the idiot.

Happened when I was on a flight from PHL-LAS recently. Bloke from N. Ireland goes in the bathroom, you smell smoke all of a sudden and then a massive blast of bad cologne. When he comes out a massive waft of cologne and smoke fills the cabin. The FA went to investigate, but he must have covered his tracks well enough as they didn't appear to apprehend his ....

They don't sound very professional. Despite being potentially dangerous and against the rules, I don't see why they have to become emotional which can only add to the danger. If they can't deal with such a situation calmly then I wonder how they'd cope in other more "stressful" situations...

No problems with handing the guy over to the police. I hope they prosecuted.

I was tempted to do it on the 11.5 hour return from CDG-DFW. I've always wondered how the international flight crews manage to stay sane (because I know alot of them do smoke).

It is amazing to me how many smokers treat the entire world as their own personal ashtray. It is considered acceptable for smokers to drop their cigarettes anywhere, and extinguishing them is optional. It is this attitude that caused that fire.

Why can't smokers take the time to properly extinguish and dispose of their cigarettes?
