I'd be interested to know if any of the people who think it is completely innapropriate to take your shoes off have ever been to asia?
If the flight is short I won't bother but once I'm doing 3 hours or so I'll take my shoes off. If I'm not coming from home at minimum I'll put on a fresh pair of socks but usually I'll have a shower before getting on the flight. Personally I've found it makes a massive difference to comfort and cannot see why anyone would have a problem with someone wearing socks

Like others here, I carry fresh (thick) socks etc.... and that's what I wear for the majority of the flight... a pair of thongs (I know, I know, you call 'em "flip flops.. so have a giggle...
) for bathroom visits....
My flying is mainly transpacific.. and I am NOT leaving my shoes on for flights that long!!!
I do not thin it "innapropriate and rude" at ALL! YMMV of course...
(but I'm still taking them off........

LH's new business class provides dedicated drawers for your shoes.
Most anemity kits in business/first include socks and even slippers. In Japan even on a 1 hr flight from Tokyo to Osaka ANA will provide slippers.
This should pretty much answer the question on whether it's appropriate to take off your shoes on flights or not.
HTB.
