Flight Aware Route

I like to use FlightAware for flight tracking/status, however, I noticed they have a section for "Route"

For example, on flight CO35 (http://flightaware.com/live/flight/COA35), the Route is "SSM129055 TVC OBK J101 LIT J180"

What does each thing mean, it would be interesting to be able to decipher it for other flights... Thanks!

The three letter codes are VORs the flight plan will cross: TVC=Traverse City, OBK=Northbrook, LIT=Little Rock. The numbers preceded by J are high-altitude Jet Airways connecting various VORs. As for SSM129055 my guess would be that refers to the 129-degree radial, 55 DME fix from the SSM (Sault Ste Marie?) VOR.

Herb is correct. You will also see coding for standard terminal arrival routes and standard instrument departures.

The flight/route is usually that filed by the airline with the FAA and attached to the a/c flight plan as amended in-flight. As FlightAware data is not reliable outside the US, you'll see some interrupted or truncated route data in those cases.

You can use these two sites to help figure out the route.

http://www.myairplane.com/databases/...dex.php?mode=d
Gives you the airport maps, arrival and departure routes

also

www.airnav.com
You can input the VOR's and fixes from the flight plan and get their location.

Of course as was mentioned, this is the filed flight plan from op's, it can and usually does change as requested by pilots and/or atc.
